Russia is invading Ukrain but...

haha. I always talk about how ridiculous their alerts are. This one might even be the most stupid I have ever seen. But they are often awful. I have the alert thing turned on just to laugh at how dumb they are.

Everyone knows Russia had been supplying and providing troops to the separatists so the news is not as shocking.

But did anyone know brad and Angelia got married? Not really... 😉

This is how mine shows. It's even on the US edition 😀

I know right, it's not like we can choose where we get our news from... 😛
Because giving an example from one means I only read one. 😛

This is more a critique of the terrible state of news media in general. I'm not sure what's worse, their inability to note what's important or their fascination with articles that look like a 9th graders work.

In their defense, more Americans (those more likely to view CNN) care more about celebrity news than what is happening on the other side of the world.

Unless you have family in the area, who gives a shit about Ukraine, Russia, or Crimea? - said every average American.

No, no, no, it's not Russian-backed. It's just retired and current soldiers spending their vacation time in Ukraine, totally on their own accord. Tanks, what tanks?

The average American doesn't even have a clue what is Crimea.

But then the media has a big role in this ignorance too.

Even if they did, what up to the minute coverage of this 'invasion' do we need?

8:04 - "Russia invades Ukraine!"
8:06 - "Russia still invading!"
8:15 - "Russia continuing this invasion, despite Ukraine not enjoying it!"
...
11:15 "Yep, Russia definitely still invading!"

The media isn't the problem, despite what everyone wants to believe. The problem is what the people who consume this media actually want. Russia doing Russian things isn't something most people care about, especially if it doesn't directly effect the US. The social lives of celebrities, however, offer something far more valuable than looking at pictures of kids shot by Russian tanks: it offers a fantasy. One day, when you're rich, you will be just like Brad and Angelina! You will do this and that and whatnot.

It's fairly well know they are indirectly involved, sending weapons, equipment, and likely some support troops in guise. It's been suspected they have been more directly involved by sending in troops as well.

By sending in troops in force, with tanks, it has changed to direct (known) involvement. It's a sharp escalation of events, and significantly more important than a celeb wedding, which is the point.

Mobile app alert, breaking news != news alerts. The first article in the app however is the Russia/Ukraine story.

Yeah, I'm just talking about the app. This fucking worthless celebrity marriage is interrupting every single user of the CNN app who hasn't voluntarily turned off alerts (because it is on at default). I just enjoy the pure stupidity of it all nowadays, so I keep it on too.

Yes, I see what you mean, but it has a lot to do with how Americans have been conditioned (and that does have a big role of media).

Why is that people of other countries and their media isn't like this? I regularly watch English news/documentary coverage of British and German sources and there is a world of difference. You come across people from Europe and they are so much more well informed about the world....so much more insightful.

Different cultures is about the only explanation I can think of. American's are far too interested in the lives of people rather than the state of the world. Decades of isolationism might have played a part to forming that, plus xenophobic fears of the refugees of whatever Europe / Asia conflict spilling into America. We just don't like that kind of stuff.

If you can answer the same question except substituting "health care" for "media", you'd probably have your answer.

When this first started, a lot of the ”local separatists” had to ask for directions to get around the town they're in.

There's no "...but" when the bullet hits the bone.

One thing I did know before today: Russia invaded Ukraine (has/hand been for several months, in fact)

One thing I did not know before today (well, before this thread, just now): Pitt and Jolie got married. Really? I always thought they were married?
<--shocked!
:hmm:
