Ship sinks in Russia, 7 Chinese missing

Seven Chinese sailors are missing after a Chinese cargo ship sank in Russian waters near Japan on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

"Three of the 10 Chinese sailors onboard were saved but seven are still missing after the ship sank off the waters of Vladivostok," it said in a statement on its website.

The ministry didn't mention the cause of the incident, saying rescue efforts and an investigation into the incident are ongoing.

But the Global Times, a Chinese language newspaper based in Beijing, said yesterday the ship was fired on by the Russian navy before it sank, citing a Russian newspaper.

New Star, the cargo ship, was sequestered at the Russian port of Nakhodka earlier this month for alleged smuggling. It left the port not far from the Sino-Russian border without permission from Russian authorities last Thursday and was chased by a cruiser, the newspaper said.

Later, the warship shot at least 500 rounds onto the ship and forced it to sail back toward the port in force 6 winds.

However, the Chinese ship started to sink on the way. According to the report, in a period of almost 24 hours, Russian navy officers and soldiers onboard the cruiser watched the sinking boat and did not make any response to the cries for help from the crewmen.

In the end, 16 sailors onboard New Star got on two lifeboats. The Russian sailors managed to save one boat carrying eight people, while the other was engulfed in the waves.

Three of the missing sailors are Chinese while the other five came from Indonesia, the report said.

The coastal coordination and assistance center of Vladivostok announced on Sunday that a Russian coast guard cruiser saved eight foreign sailors trapped by bad weather. It did not mention the alleged fire from the Russian navy.

The Russian News Agency reported the incident yesterday and said the coast guard just found an empty boat in a three-day search. It also cited bad weather as the reason behind the accident.

According the International Maritime Organization, the owner of New Star is a shipping company of Zhejiang, while the operator is a company based in Guangzhou.

Whoa.. look at page 2 video...

Russians trying to Borat them and tell them in English... to stop their engines?

This will not play well in Chinese public.. that is for sure.. what is the value of sinking the ship and murdering the crew?

It's funny how that works. If either side felt the need to ratchet this up to the level of a shooting war, they could easily do so with control of the media. With constant focus and propaganda and war-drum beating a population can be lead into pretty much anything.. But neither side wants that, so it wont happen.

At least I hope it wont.

That sucks being in that situation, seems like the Russians acted a bit like thugs (if only as they watched for a while as the ship sank). But then, Russians are thugs by their culture, so no surprise.

I suppose this won't help Chinese/Russian relations.

Of course it is a real issue. Imagine if the Canadian navy (hold your lols for a second) did the same to a US cargo ship.

By that example the US would be angry, and probably want the sailors in Canda punished + money for the family's, it wouldn't get into a war for sure.

If this did not start a war between the Russians and the Chinese, then I doubt the sinking of a Chinese ship violating Russian waters will.
On March 2, 1969, a group of Chinese troops ambushed Soviet border guards on Zhenbao Island. The Soviets suffered 31 dead and 14 wounded. They retaliated on March 15 by bombarding Chinese troop concentrations on the Chinese bank of the Ussuri and by storming Zhenbao Island. The Soviet forces claimed that the Chinese suffered 800 casualties while the Soviets only had 60 killed or wounded.

Further border clashes occurred in August 1969, this time along the western section of the Sino-Soviet border, in Xinjiang. The Chinese suffered more casualties.

If this happened on the high seas, out of Russian territorial waters it might be one thing, but they were in a Russian port
while being investigated for smuggling. And then tried to sneak out and escape.

Under more normal circumstances a Russian Cruiser would have stopped their escape, but add in gale force winds, and the ship sank.

The Russians had every right to do what they did, and the Chinese Captain must bear the blame for criminal behavior and very bad judgment.

A Russian court would likely have granted far more mercy than mother nature did in this case.

If the cruiser pumped 500 shells into the vessel (cargo ship), they had to be using very small shells.

It was not 5" shells that were being used.

Also, the ship was "escaping" after being confined due to smuggling.

The Chinese are not going to do squat.

This is what I was thinking.

They shot at the hull with a mounted machine-gun, and the ship slowly took on water. It's not like they blasted their ass with cannons.

The Chinese can take a lot. Remember when the US bombed their embassy in Belgrade? Sure, they protested, but they still lend us money ;). There are more than 1.5 Chinese in this world, they can tolerate a few loses, J/K :). Don't ever mess with the Russians, they will shoot.

Cruiser? It was a small Coast Guard boat armed with what is essentially a 30mm machine gun, which (if you look up the specs), cannot fire 500 shells (its entire ammunition) at once. It can fire in bursts of 5-50 shells, after which is has to cool for 15 minutes. It CAN fire all 500 shells but the gun must be discarded after that.

Also, that was a 6000-ton ship. No way a 30mm machine gun can sink that ship. Complete nonsense.

The ship was in a heavy storm and simply took some water.

1.5 Pactello? Man, where da Japanese women at! Need to breed and quick.:p

Seriously, no worries here, Russians and Chinese get along fine and Chinese are largely shall we say 'forgiving' about loss of life.
