Russia boosts oil production

Pipeline monopoly Transneft said Wednesday that it was ready to implement the government's decision to boost oil exports by 150,000 barrels per day from July and extend its capacity further in 2003.

Hopefully this will be 150k fewer barrels we will buy from the middle east.

If we could wean ourselves of our addiction to big cars and SUV's, we wouldn't have to buy ANY oil from the middle east.
Don't believe it? We'd need to increase our average mileage to about 38-40 mpg, and there are lots of vehicles that can do that or better now.

good!

earthman: Dream on with bush league in the white house
That should be Number 1 on the priority list
It's what gore would have implemented already but hey that's life :disgust:

It would probably take a lot more than that. We wont even talk about stuff like plastics which are made from oil as well.

If Al Gore really hates big cars and SUVs, why was his fat ass rolling around D.C. in a Lincoln Navigator? Does it get much bigger than that?

As far as I am coincerned, if you don't like SUV's - don't buy one. I plan on driving one for the rest of my life. If you don't like it, you can come to Houston and kiss my big, white, conservative Explorer driving ass. 🙂

most politicians are hypocrites. Al Gore spends OUR money to use airforce 2 to campaign :/ Don't worry, Bush will do the same thing when it comes to the 2004 election 😀

we need to develop water/hydrogen engines that burns clean so we can be self sufficient and we don't have to get oil from middle east anymore. (aint gonna happen any time soon since Bush is pro-oil)

I guess it is easier to blame Bush that to realize the realities of energy.

You dont get hydrogen from water for free. It takes energy to do so.
Fuel cells currently require a good bit of platinum to make them work. This keeps them from being cheap.

These are the 2 biggest obsticles for the "hydrogen economy".

Gore drives an SUV. Anyway, like bush has a say in what Americans choose to drive. If all those SUV drivers like buying oil from the middle east and ruining the planet, then that is their right as Americans.

I will refuse to consider SUVs as options until I can get a Honda Pilot Hybrid givin' me 30 mpg or better in the city...

Where are you going to get the hydrogen from? You can get hydrogen from water, but that takes electricity. Current fuel cell vehicles burn gasoline to make hydrogen. The other way to use a fuel cell on a car is to strap on a tank of compressed hydrogen. Personally, I don't want a tank of hydrogen strapped onto the vehicle I'm driving.

I'll switch from hydrocarbons when they come up with a Mr Fusion.

Ahem. About half of our oil use is related to cars and other vehicles. About 17-20 percent of the oil we use actually comes from the middle east. You do the math.
Hydrogen is a net loss fuel. It takes 5 times the energy to produce the hydrogen than you get from it, so you need to use Solar power or something renewable to break it down, though it does burn very clean.
I wouldn't worry about a tank of compressed hydrogen. You don't worry about a big tank of gasoline made of sheet metal that can be puntured by a brisk thrust from a pocket knife, do you?
Watch those corners in that Explorer, I hear they can be a bitch....

That might work for today, but energy demands are not decreasing.

That would depend on how you are getting the hyrdrogen. Gas run thru a fuel cell is still more effecient than an internal combustion engine.

Make one think perhaps Gore isn't as environmentally considerate as the PR image might suggest, eh?

One big help might be for environmentalist wackos to allow construction of new nuclear power plants. That's a cheap source of energy. It won't eliminate dependency on oil but it would sure aid the national Energy Policy.

The only place to get that much hydrogen is water, i.e. the ocean.
You are right that demand for oil is increasing, as the process of extracting it gets more expensive. Sounds like a good reason to use as little as possible, in spite of what Texans want to drive. Or Al Gore for that matter.

Yes there is hydrogen in water, but it would be the most expensive to extract. Lots of other hydrocarbons to exploit first.
