Russ, since Mesquite, TX is fairly close to me (about 75 minutes driving time), I'd consider picking it up for you. Then perhaps I could take it up into Oklahoma, then someone else could relay it until it finally reached you. They said "substantial" shipping, so we could beat that!

Whadda-ya-say??? Anybody want to estimate the blocks it could kick out? Is it cost effective or just cool-ness factor?

Well it is only 1600mhz... for that price you could get quite a few 1ghz T-Birds... :p

Honestly it doesnt really seem that cost effective... unless those processors are QUITE optimized :)

Not cost effective. If I read the speed page correctly, three 1 Ghz Athlons would be as fast. It is high on the coolness meter, though.:)

Looks just like the SGI I've been using on weekends for SETI, except mine has 16x300MHz (R12000, not R10000) processors and 4 gigs of ram. I believe that each CPU has something like 8megs of cache, so you can't really measure SGI MHz VS Intel/AMD MHz.

It'd make a great database server, but for distributed computing you'd be much better off with a Beowulf or a COW :)

If you do get it and you need a sysadmin...

That'd be a heckuva SETI machine I'd bet. Any idea why 8 CPUs would just die though?

Batti,

Remember, the 700Mhz Athlons for KLAT2 were donated. Still a hell of a lot more bang for the buck, though.

Woe, I should have checked this thread earlier. I didn't realize you guys were talking about my herd (KLAT2). ;)

Batti,

OOPS, I didn't realize they'd added that in. That makes it even tastier.

TheyCallMeSAK,

Looking at your stats, it appears that you have a few nodes down.:)

Ya, Russ you are right. Those stupid Walmart fans I was using to circulate the air between the racks stopped functioning. They all overheated and blew up. Luckily, though, the two "hotspares" kicked in and kept my, on mean "our" (UKY) stats going. ;)

It is true. All that computing power for only $41,000 (that is still if one was to buy all the compnents at retail price), is so worth it! Imagine what money donations, gifts from manufacturers could do! I have to read more about the networking they jury-rigged ;). Seems like it all works quite nicely. Someone send me in there armed with a floppy to assimilate those!!!

Drooooooooooooo00000000000000OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOl:p.
