Damn fraternities/Sorrities. Here I am on my lunch break at work (which is on a college campus) and it looks like someone loaded up a couple B-52s with lawn darts and painted frat advertisements on the tail of every dart, then dropped them over the campus. The whole palce is covered in woodenstakes with signs stuck to the top of them. Literally every walkway has ads every ten feet stuck next to it... There must be 5000 of these damn things all over the place. Same with the sidewalks.. covered in sorority ads written in chalk. I wish they'd fine these people for littering.

That would piss me off, but as most of you know, most things like that piss me off anyway. If it's as bad as it sounds, I might even make a case to complain to the Dean. Usually, I just prefer to hold grudges. :)

Then you'd probably have to complain about some other organizations on campus as well, since fraternities and sororities are not the only ones who advertise their presence the first few weeks of school.

Do any of you computer geeks have a life outside of the realm of the computer? These are social institutions. Ya know........where people gather to socialize, shoot the sh!t about something more inportant than computers, have a few beers and not worry about if you got a 96% on the last calc 452 test.

Whether they want to join a social organization or not, the majority of posters seem predisposed against greek life in general for some reason.

Why? Because that would mean have some "fun"? Life is not all about coding and figuring out equations.

And you can't have fun w/o joing a frat/soroity? I got invited to all their parties and didn't have to pay their dues so why join?

I don't have a problem with whatever people do in frats, aside from them covering the campus in advertisements. If they want to advertise, there are several public bulletin boards around campus where they can psot ads for free. They're also welcome to place an ad in the school newspaper, or buy airtime on a local TV channel.

I feel the same way about these people as I do about people who put things on my doorknob or the window of my car. They should be fined for littering. It's great if they want to "shoot the sh!t about something more inportant than computers, have a few beers and not worry about if you got a 96% on the last calc 452 test" but that doesn't give them the excuse to cover the campus in flyers. What would you think if I went to your local public park with 500 wooden stakes with advertisments for "used Honda Civic for sale, $4500" attached to them, and stuck them in the ground all over the place? Do you consider that legitimate advertising or littering?

ROFL, not trying to trash a whole frat on the basis of a single chapter, but all of the TKE's I know are on the 6-7 year plan assuming they have not drunk their way outta college yet (which most of them have).

And just because someone doesn't like Greek Life (also known as persistent inebriation ;)) doesn't mean they don't have a social life. Not everyone enjoys the testicular saber rattleing that dictates most of the frat philosophy.

But I'm anti-social to begin with and would much rather pull an all night editing session than endure the usually trying experience of "typical" social interaction... so my views might be skewed just a bit. ;)

It's this kind of thinking that skews many's initial dealings with fraternities. There are many different fraternities out there on any given campus; each will be comprised of a number of guys. Not all fraternities are for everybody; each individual must decide for himself. What is this 'frat philosophy' you speak of?
I also understand that it is very easy to go through college and have a great social life without being a member of a fraternity. This also means that one can go through college as a member of a fraternity and also have a great social life.
Yes, there are Greeks who flunk out of college because they drink too much; there are also non-Greeks who do this. In fact, on my campus, the Greek retention rate is greater than the all-college retention rate.
I was down at U of I this weekend; everywhere you looked on the ground, someone had written an advertisement for a club (or fraternity) in chalk, or taped a piece of paper to the ground. The point I was trying to make with this is that Greek organizations are not the only ones who advertise.
There are many benefits of being in a fraternity. As I said before, our house bill is less than room and board in the dorms. In addition, what money we do pay does not go exclusively to room and board; we spend money on parties, trips, and house events in general. As students, we may also participate in any events the school throws for students.
Finally, yes, you can be friends with a fraternity and go to their parties. But parties are such a small part of what we do. There is a lot more to see, and many people miss out on this.

notfred, it's part of college. Spreading the flyers has always been done like that. Similar, I guess, to candidates littering my door with their leaflets. (Now if I can just get them to understand that I can't vote in this state nor show public support for a candidate, so why try and talk to me and give me flyers.)
