Yes, Rush is very obscure. If you dig a little, you might even find reference to other obscure bands such as The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or even Led Zeppelin.

WHOOOOSH!

Is that an airliner flying over my head at 35,000 feet, or did I miss an earlier post that this one is mocking?

PM coming shortly 😉

And Dain, I  you too 😀

I heard there's some weird band from Australia or something where the guitarist dresses up like a schoolboy

Rush isn't obscure by any means.. they're progressive rock pioneers and spawned a million other bands. They get tons of radio play around here (Chicago).

I think most people take offense to Gary's voice though.

Who the hell is Gary? 😕 Besides, Spongebob's pet snail?

I'll let the fact that you know Spongebob character names slide as you have children 😛

Gary is his real name.. Geddy is a nickname based on the fact that his mother's heavy accent can't produce 'Gary' and it comes out as 'Geddy'

It became a nickname afterwords

Okay, I'll take your word for it. 😀

Yes, I know all the Spongebob character names. It's one of the few cartoons I can stomach watching...well, that and Justice League. 😉

I know all of the Spongebob characters. And I don't have kids, that I know of.

You must smoke a lot of weed.

Edit-This thread is now about weed and Spongebob Squarepants.

? who said rush was obscure in that thread?

there's only one Geddy Lee. just having the voice that he does and doing what he does is amazing. being good at it brings the rock to a whole other level. without him, Rush would not be.

Rush pwnz all y'all

I'm pretty sure he means the lyrics are obscure. He didn't say unknown...

And for the record, I like Geddy Lee's voice.

Hmm... perhaps he did mean the lyrics. I do know that many people are unaware of how profound and intelligent they tend to be.

And for the record, I like Geddy's voice as well. Admittedly, it was weaker on many of the earliest albums, and has declined a bit since Test for Echo, but from Moving Pictures to Counterparts I would say it was quite clear and just about beautiful in spots. I would say pinnacle examples of how good his voice could be would be "Chain Lightning" off Presto, "Ghost of a Chance" from Roll the Bones (the most beautiful rock song ever IMO), and "Animate" and "Nobody's Hero" off Counterparts.

Vic, thanks for the tips. I have listend to all the typical stuff but not those tunes. Working on that now🙂

I like his voice too. As for the lyrics, well some might be obscure if you haven't read any Ayn Rand. In any case, Platypus is catching on.

Hmm... If you read some of his books/writings, you'd know that the Peart-Rand connection has been extremely overplayed. Yes, he is a libertarian (note the small "l"), but hardly a Randite. As Neil himself said once, "I am nobody's disciple."

A example that just ran through my head is "Red Barchetta" off Moving Pictures, where Neil predicted that stringent vehicle safety laws would lead to huge gas-guzzling SUV's and the unintended consequences that would lead to of inattentive yet aggressive drivers who feel so protected in their vehicles that they no longer concern themselves with safe driving habits (admittedly he borrowed the idea from an earlier short story).

If you read the liner you would know that "Red Barchetta" is based off of the short story. "A Nice Morning Drive", by Richard S Foster.

Uhh...

I've recently done a 180 on Rush. I didn't use to like them but now I'm coming around. I'll credit a lot of that to Neil Peart. That guy is a drum god plain and simple and that's beyond argument.

On a related note any Rush fans have some album recomendations for me? I just picked up Moving Pictures so that one's taken care of.

Edit: Oh, and btw, Rush is in no way obscure. WTF are you talking about?

I have no idea how the quote got screwed up. I didn't type all that, Spydermag68 did.

Seriously, not many people know of "Spirit Of Radio" which is an amazing song. Often makes me tear up, so beautiful for this language.

Invisible airwaves crackle with life
Bright antennae bristle with the energy
Emotional feedback on timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free

cheesy puns about physics/electromagnetics is what passes for lyrical brilliance on ATOT?

Stick with Perry Como then.

I don't either, but Vic posted it and now it's fixed.

What don't you get? Buy the album, listen to the lyrics, read the liner notes.

And here's the text to the short story the song was based off:
