Running WinXP Pro.

System has slowed to a crawl.

Checking Windows Task Manager, I find at the Processes tab that:

WINLOGON.EXE is showing 100% under CPU

Any suggestions on how to get this rig back up to speed.

Thanks

Check & see if you have Patch #Q811493 installed. If you have XP set to automatically update itself, that could be the problem. I?m running XP and had this problem also. Once I uninstalled Q811493, my system was flying again. To uninstall just open Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs & find it in the list. Hope this helps.

DO NOT FORMAT....... yet.

Check add/remove programs for Windows XP Patch 811493. If it is there uninstall it, as that should fix the slowdown.

There appears to be a known problem with AV software and that patch... Info Here.

LOL-

Looks like Ducker beat me to it... ;)

Thanks guys. Removed patch and system got much faster, but still didn't seem right. Since everything was backed up I decided to go with BmXStuD's advice and format and reinstall. Will make a system restore cd and my life should be easier in the future.

Thanks again for all your help!!

Now you'll never know what the problem is and next time you come across it all you'll know how to do is format/reinstall.

Generally speaking I would reccommend looking a little deeper into these types of issues before formating over the evidence as to why the problem is occuring.
