I've been setting up a samba server using redhat 9.0 that will be part of out mixed mode ad domain. I would like to know when installing samba do I need to set up a wins server because right now I don't have one. I know that samaba basically is like a nt 4 pdc or bdc. So I'm wondering if it does need the wins for proper name resolution.

do you want to just have samba shares, mapped drives and folders, etc? If so, wins is not necessary.

Samba 3.x also has AD integration so I can't imagine WINS being necessary.

Yes I'll be using it for sharing drives it will in know way be performing as a domain controller. I think redhat 9 does not have samba 3. I 've heard a lot about samba 3.

IIRC, 9.0 has samba 3. I'll fire up my install and see, but i believe so.
