Running vista via bootcamp vs real PC runing vista?

Im putting together my Mac and im trying to decide if I should dual boot with vista or use bootcamp for vista? Is it the same thing or is there a performance hit? I cannot find benchmarks that compare a machine exact same specs running vista via bootcamp versus a machine running a native version of vista. Anyone have some links or info?

bootcamp isn't virtualization. bootcamp is essentially a boot loader.. you are dual booting.

There are two ways people usually run Vista/XP on Mac's (which is where I think you might be getting confused)

Bootcamp - Creates a separate partition for Vista/XP and you boot right into it (dual boot), its the real vista (no virtualization).
Parallels/VMWare - Virtualized XP/Vista. Can be run from right within OSX without needing to reboot. Its very fast, but not as fast as bootcamp.

I prefer the virtualized method as its handy to just be able to load XP/Vista at your leisure without the need to exit out of OSX. It all depends on your needs though. The latest versions of the Parallels (and I think VMWare as well), actually allow you to use bootcamp to create a partition and install vista/XP within, then actually virtualize that partition and use it from within OSX if need be, or reboot and boot into Vista/XP as a normal bootcamp partition.

hey thanks for the replies i was thinking it was just a dual boot, and the reason why you think i am confused is because i will be running a hackintosh... so i could dual boot, or bootcamp or VT.

I think i could use bootcamp, it would be awesome to be able to use that bootcamp install inside the osx environment!!!!

well nevermind i just read that due to the emulation stuff i cannot run bootcamp via a hack .

The Bootcamp install is not anything to squeal about. You run the assistant, which non-destructively partitions your drive (in Leopard you can do the same thing from within Disk Utility) and then once the partition is done, you restart with your Windows SP2+ or Vista disc in the system. You then format the partition, and install Windows onto it. Just like with any other computer.

Luckily, Vista and OSX are easy to dual boot the non-bootcamp way on a Hackintosh- install OSX, then install Vista- then modify the Vista bootloader with EasyBCD. The Vista bootloader can then launch OSX or any other OS.

It would be cool to use the same Vista install as either boot or virtual from within OSX, but for now Parallels works fine inside OSX from its own virtual install.

sounds good i have dual boot on notebook had to use chain0 as i couldnt get easybcd to work.

I am getting new motherboard for desktop, but I have used all my mass effect installs and had to get another. I really dont want to reinstall vista again, though its pretty much required with new motherboard, different chipset and such. Oh well can't wait for mobo.

Prob will use vmware over parallels though. Thanks for the info on bootcamp i didnt know it just setup the partition.
