Running Spikes

Question for sprinters:

I was just wondering how much time they take off your time in 100metres, I'm gonna buy some soon, ones like michael johnson's and i'm not buying them just because they are like his BTW :)

You running on packed sand, or rubber?

It'll be 1-2 seconds, yea. If you already have a good pair of running shoes, maybe 1 second. They really help in the first couple meters of your run.

Not enought to turn a mediocre runner into a good runner if that was your hopes.

Whatever you do, don't go and take off all the spikes, and use the shoes to run a cross country race. :Q I forgot my running shoes, and lets just say I totally killed my feet.

vi_edit, i'm 14, can run 12.02 seconds on a grass track (which is used as the school play ground so you can guess the quality) with Nike Air Max's on and no training, i'm quite proud of myself with that, my P.E teachers reckon i could go pro so i'm getting coaching at the local track as soon as i get spikes

I personally think you'll notice more of a difference going from grass to a rubberized track than you will from spikes.

The biggest thing about shoes, IMNSHO, is that they produce a placebo effect, making you think you are quicker, so you may actually put a little more effort into it than normal.

I was more of a distance runner, but I've actually seen times GO DOWN when people put on spikes because they were less comfortable and energy absorbant than running flats or training shoes and the person was in pain from them. But that's in distance running, not sprints.

I would think the track type, and an efficient start would yield a better time than the shoes worn.

Once again, just my opinion though based upon experience.

i dont know about short distances but i run the 3200 in track and also the 5k for xc and wearing flats really helped my times a lot. Probably because they were much lighter than my other shoes, so it made my legs less heavy.

As to sprinting, the spikes really help a lot. BTW, what state do you live in, and what division of HS do you think you will be running (1A, 2A....), AvidOC?

I live in the UK and i have no idea what you mean by HS or what you mean by which division

I doubt it will take seconds off your time. Maybe ot most half a second. 12.02 is pretty good, for the 100m (I assume that is what you are referring to). The fastest kids in my leage can run right around 11, and most of them are 17, 18. So 12 when you're 14 is good. Switching to better shoes might get you down to 11.5, and with training and maturity, you might be able to get down under 11.

I guess it depends on the competition, but I was going against guys running consistent 10s-12s when I got to HS..I was blown away, even with spikes on all weather tracks.

Its really hard to teach speed..not saying that it can't be done though.

Iono, but shouldn't everyone on the track team run consistant 10-12's? Above 12 is considered slow.
