i have a small network here now, and it is a mixture of Win NT and 9x machines. i want to run Seti@home as a service on these, so that it runs when no users are logged on. As i will b installing on about 40 computers, i want to make a small .bat file to copy the client and my user details into the relevent directory, so that i do not have to type it all into each computer.

if i was to just use the nt-cmdline client, would it be visible to the users, and if so, what could i use to hide it?

thanks in advance

thanks for that soni, i will try that later on the Cellery 333s that are running NT, but if anyone can get something for 9x, then i will set it up on the 16 Duron 650s, and the 18 Cellery 466s that are all running Win 98

yeah, i think i will run SetiHide, but i need to run it as a service, because there is a lot of time when there are no users logged on.

i'm gonna be where the computers are in about an our or two, so i'll update ya'll on the progress then, but any more info/help will be much appreciated, then we can get more WUs for TA :)

well i've just tried what soni mentioned on the NT machines, but it could not get into the registry to change it

i will try something on the 98 machines later, when i'm in the room with the decent proccys (i'm on a crappy 166 at the mo)

ConfusedBW: Have a look at the link below. I haven't tried it yet myself but it should be what you're looking for on the Win9x boxes.

SETI@Home as a service

As far as NT/2000, I use a little program (about 1MB in size) that installs and hides the client. I'm pretty sure you've got to be Admin on the machine you're install it on though. Lemme know (PM or reply here) and I'll Email it to ya.

You have to be administrator to play with the registry!

Guess I should have written that, corrected!!

well the system admins were trying a while ago to get it to work, and i was talking to them about it, but they didn't know how to get it to run as a service, and now that i know how to do it, then i will do it (and if i can't change stuff due to needing to be admin, i will talk to them, and tell them i know of a way, cos they seemed pretty enthuastic to install it)

Excellent Assimilation ConfusedBW!

Timely thread as well. I'm looking at installing Seti-as-a-Service on a P3 500 NT box right now, and using OK's proxy.

well, i have the two floppy disks here (Win9x one and an NT one) and will see if i can assimilate those PCs 2day :)

if i can't get it to work, i will go talk to the system admin (well, one of his "bitches" as we all call them, also known as his assistants :D (no offense meant to anyone who is an assistant here)) and tell him that i know a way of installing Seti to run when there are no users logged on

i will report back later how it all went :)
