Is there a way to run rc5 while the windows NT logon screen is up. I know that it closes all programs when it does that, but is there any way to keep rc5 running (maybe in dos or something)?
 
I'd suggest perhaps installing it as a 'service' and locking the workstation. Security... AND cracking. 🙂
 
Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. I'm a newbie to Windows NT. Also, I'm not the System Administrator, so I don't have absolute control over the machine.
 
If you don't have administrative privileges, you won't be able to install it as a service. If you can convince your net admin to give you admin privileges at that workstation, just run "dnetc -install" at the command prompt in order to install the service. That will cause it to run even if nobody is logged in.
 
If I understand what you're asking...

If the file dnetc.exe is in your current directory at the prompt, then "dnetc -install" will work. If it's not in the current directory then you'd need "c:\fullpathtodnetc\dnetc -install".
 
It'll give you a message box saying that it was installed properly as a service if it's done correctly. It won't just leave you hanging.
 
One of our DPC friends had a back door to installing as a service if you don't have admin. rights, although I don't remember the procedure.

Having said that, be sure that you have permission to run the client.....

Can you find out how this was done? I do not need to know to install it
myself. Just wondering how you can get around the security to install
a service without Admin access.

I cannot run it at work anymore because security folks feel it is a
threat to have it running. Even though I have Admin access I will not
install it for fear of losing my job. So now I have my home systems
cracking. Not quite a crackrack but I have about 12 dualeron systems
cranking. Oh, they could never tell me how it could be used as a security threat but I think the security folks are just flexing
their muscle.

If I install it as a service, will it run not only when no one is logged in, but when the log in screen is up? EX. If someone logs out and leaves it there with the log in screen.
 
Yep, NT services are actually started before the "Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to Log In" screen comes up, so the client will start automatically when the computer is booted...
 
The same goes for Win9x. Obviously there's no Ctrl-Alt-Del to logon, but it will crack while the password box is up as a service under Win9x.

I can't remember the exact procedure, but it was one of our better known DPC friends that had posted about it a while back. I tried a search of the archives without luck. You might want to post over at GoT BBS, you'll surely get a response.

As far as a security risk running RC5, it would seem to be MUCH safer than e-mail and web browsing. After all, how often does M$ come out with security patches for IE and Outlook? I've been cracking and reading this BBS for over a year without hearing of any Dnet problems.

As for your distributed net ID, that's the email address you used to create your account with Distributed.net. Once you have cracked RC5 for a day or so, and your stats actually show up on Dnet's servers (go to the Statistics page and do a search for your email address) you can click on the link at the bottom that says "email me my password" or something similar, to get your password, at which point you will be able to have your account join Team Anandtech.
