running projects again

Finally got around to getting my core i5 4590 rig in shape to do some projects. New aftermarket cooler keeping CPU cool at 100% load. Any new projects over the past year worth jumping into? I'm back to doing Universe@home for now. I've lurked on the forums off & on. I noticed skynetpogs is done. That was one of my favorite projects to fold on. If not my #1. Been eyeballing some AM3 CPUs to maybe plug into my 990FX board with the Zalman 9900 cooler. Would need a PSU & memory kit though. Can't believe an FX 8350 is 89.99 now on newegg. Hope life is treating everyone in team anandtech well!

Looks like Rakesearch starts tomorrow at 5:00 PM USA CST. I should be home around 5:40-6:00 PM CST & will start it up.

Welcome back! 🙂 Rakesearch is going now if you can join earlier.

Hi brad, greetings!
8300, 8320e, and 8370e might also get into consideration. These 95W TDP SKUs mean less headache for cooling and power bill.

I've got an FX-6300 Vishera six-core AM3+ CPU, sitting on my desk, NEW in box, looking for a home. I bought it to go with my (thus far, untested) 970-chipset Biostar board, that I bought open-box from Newegg like years ago.

Make me an offer if interested. I paid like $52, Newegg wanted $65 recently, but have gone on sale for as low as $60. I think that they go for $80 now on ebay, they're getting slightly harder to find.

Granted, I'm guessing that the 8-core FX chips would have more appeal for a DC'er, but still, for the right price, maybe you would want my FX-6300.

I already built an FX-8320E rig, not overclocked (using an LM78-USB3 R2 board), don't really need two FX rigs.

So, let me know. Hope the Mods don't mind this.

Edit: Would also send you 2x8GB DDR3-1600, and the 970TA mobo, and the FX-6300 BNIB CPU, for $150 shipped CONUS. RAM alone is worth $80 or so.

Edit: Can also throw in some OCZ Vendetta 92mm tower heatpipe heatsinks, AM3/AM3+/775-compatible, removable/replaceable fan, PWM I believe. LMK. Assuming they fit in the box with everything else.

@Bradtech519,
re Universe@home: Last time I checked, it performed quite a bit better on Linux than on Windows.

re RakeSearch: After you attached the host to the project, shut the client down, copy the AVX2 files from @zzuupp's post about optimized apps (an exe and an xml after unzipping) into C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\rake.boincfast.ru_rakesearch\, and start the client again. Performance should go up almost tenfold, i.e. this step is essential for this project.

Thanks for offer! I'm going over some options right now & this is one. I might just drop a used 4770/4790 in this board & sell an unused Xbox One 500GB & AM3 board. I'd probabaly keep this i5 4590 around until the 4770/4790 proves to be a solid cpu since it wouldn't be new.

It appears that board supports those now. Hopefully it would post with one of those CPUs. MSI 990FXA-GD80. Don't think it was the V2 model

I dug my Surface Pro 1 with a Core i5 3317u out of the drawer. Looks like it's dual core but has 4 threads. I downloaded the AVX1 client off github and it's running 4 tasks now. Looks to be a close sprint. Doesn't appear it has the AVX2 instruction set. But it appears to be going quite a bit faster with AVX client.

  1. Looks like Rig2 is up and going. I got a used AMD x2 240 Dual Core @ 2.8 GHz for $5.00 shipped to see if my old MSI FXA GD80 mobo still works that I used to have in my FX8350 rig that was replaced by the Core I5 4590. Apparently it was my old FX8350 that died on me (never overheated) or got over 55c. Because the system posted and is currently updating Windows 8.1 off my old HDD that I used with it. I'll prob be buying an AMD FX 8000 series 8 core and getting it back to folding this coming week. I wish best buy wasn't $30-50 marked per CPU or I'd go pick one up. Good news for next sprint

I bought an FX8150 bulldozer for $40 & it should be in next week. I was going to go FX8320/8350/8370 but couldn't pass up the price for 10-20% gain. Now looking at Core i7 4770/4790 upgrade for my I5 4590 rig. FX8150 should be here next week. I noticed I go some LHC tasks last night. Been a while since I've got anything new.

Bulldozer has arrived. I'll be installing it this evening & having it join my core i5 4590 on trying to get to 1m on LHC before it runs out of tasks again. Going to have to dig around to find my Zalman 9900. I had an FX 8350 in this same motherboard for years. Glad to have it going again.
