Running over a mattress or box spring doesn't sound like it would be so bad

Bet that sounded like hell...!

We used to put cable ties on the drive shafts of the company trucks to drive guys nuts but thats just insane...

Jules...! Love your new ride... 😀

Did this happen in Florida? This happened to one of our service techs. It also cut open the front of the gas tank.

I witnessed a multiple vehicle accident caused by some bozo transporting his mattress on top of a mini-van secured by bungee cords. It came off the vehicle in front of me and I was able to change lanes without problems, the guy behind me dodged right and pushed the guy in his blind spot into the guy in his blind spot, then the first guy over corrected and spun into the right lane and got t-boned before hitting the guard rail. The guy driving the van who lost the mattress either didn't notice or didn't care, I'm guessing he didn't care.

I've always told myself if I'm in the situation again I'll take my chances hitting a mattress rather than make a knee jerk reaction and endanger everybody else on the road. I figured the damage would be more like a cracked air dam, I never would have guessed a mattress could get wrapped around a drive shaft like that. I'm always careful to stay far behind or far ahead when I see a mattress on the roof of a car.

i had that happen while on my motorcycle, i had nowhere to go tho. as soon as my front end was close to the mattress i dumped it two gears (yes, at 60ish MPH) and slammed the throttle. hit the mattress with a light front end, bounced my rear tire around and wobbled a bunch. slowed down and pulled over to check the bike out, no damage. luckily no one else hit the mattress or any other cars from it, but the cops did get the guy that lost the mattress down the way a bit. the cop was amazed i didnt go down when i hit it. so was i hehe.

I just love seeing people doing 70 down the highway wit htheir sail, I mean matress bent in a 90 angle sticking straight up straining the cheap twin they used to tie it down.
I've seen so many matresses on the road and come off of cars it's not funny. If you're driving a civic, it's best to not go buy a matress unless you know someone with a truck or pay to have it delivered.

Mattresses arnt that bad, mufflers suck worse. about 10 years ago i was driving down the highway with my bro in his mustang doing about 100kph and it looked like the car infront of us ran something over and then it came up off the road. It hit the hood and bounced into the windshield. The windshield shattered and this piece of metal come flying through it. After i skidded to a halt not being able to see anything due to shattered safty glass in my eyes and a bad burning from my right arm i got off to the shoulder and we were like WTF just happened. My bro was like dude you are bleeding, i had a cut on my arm(8 stiches) and my bro was ok. We Look in the back seat and there is a rusty old muffler just sitting there on the seat. Lucky for my bro the guy behind us saw the whole thing and chased the guy down who lost the muffler and got his plate then came back to tell us. So my bros insurance did not go up it went on the other guys. The other guy tried to say it wasnt him but the insurace company took a look at his car noticed he was missing a muffler and the one i provided that we found in the back seat of our car just happened to be the OEM muffler for his type of car and the break in the exahust pipe matched exactly so they didnt believe him and sided with us.

It's even better when they have their left hand sticking out the window to help hold it down 😀

That's funny.. I recall a video in drivers ed specifically suggesting driving over a mattress on the interstate rather than swerving or braking hard :hmm:

A local derp-a-derp around here hit a transmission that was laying in the road... she thought it was plastic bag... D: It must have fallen out of the back of a truck I guess.

I will admit that a female friend and I lost a mattress off the top of her SUV once. We had strapped it down well (we thought), but it was in one of those plastic bags, and it slipped right out of the bag on the freeway like it was greased up.

A van behind us ran over it, and sure enough, the springs got tangled around the rear axle. He was able to pull over safely. We looped back around. One of CHP's roving tow trucks happened to pull up and helped the guy cut off the springs with wire cutters. I couldn't believe how relaxed the van driver was about the whole thing. He was laughing and joking and told us it was no biggie. We were so relieved that no one got hurt because of our stupidity.

Respect for admitting it in this thread. TBH I think it's kind of up to everybody, not just the buyer of the mattress to ensure it's secure for transport. Better safe than sorry.

Crazy how it can get wrapped up like that! D:

You know the more I look at the last picture from the OP it sure doesn't look like anybody is laughing and I'd swear the guy in the jacket is asking questions and it doesn't look like anybody has any answers he likes.
