Running Office 2007 (32-bit) on Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hey all.

I tried my hand at upgrading my PC recently, after I saw some WD1001FALS hard drives on the cheap (something like $0.06/GB). [On the off-topic section of this post: looking for decent, cheap DDR2 memory, preferrably an 8GB (4x2GB) kit]. Incidentally, I got Win 7 Pro through MSDNAA (through IEEE membership), and I decided to go for 64 bit. I didn't do 64 bit when I initially bought my PC (in early 2007), because rumors that 64 bit drivers for Vista were lacking were abundant, as I remember.

But now most of those rumors are gone, and most PCs you configure on the web seem to have 64 bit as the default architechture. To me this signals that this time, it's coming for sure. So currently I'm dual-booting (as of this morning) with Vista 32-bit and Win 7 64-bit (awkward, huh? and installation was very fun from a thumb drive 😀).

Though I had no need to search for drivers (I must say I was impressed) I do have one qualm:
- I have some software I want to make sure I keep as I migrate to 64 bit. Mainly Photoshop Elements Suite (came with PC purchase) and Office 2007 (since the next 64 bit version won't be out this year, and I'm in college so I need it).

Luckily, Steam appears to run (even though it is 32-bit, but I think they added some emulators) so I won't be losing my Steam games. But I'm bound to dual boot until I can figure out how to run that software in 64 bit environment (P.S.: I don't think that's a good thing).

Many thanks!

You seem to have the wrong idea about 64 bit OS's. 32 bit programs run just fine on 64 bit OS, no configuring needed. The 32 bit programs will not be able to take advantage of 64 bit processing but, that is all. The programs will work exactly the same as always.

ooo really? That's actually great. However, this morning I browsed the other drive (the one configured with 32-bit) and tried to open Word (granted, only tried once) and it said something about an illegal operation...

But I'll try copying the Office Suite to the other Program Files folder this afternoon, and see how it all works out.

Thanks Magnus. I'll post back my experiences this evening

Not sure I completely understood what you did, but unless you have INSTALLED (using Office install disk) MS office on your PC, you won't be able to run it. Also, you used the words "copying the Office Suite to the other Program Files folder". If you mean "copying" literally, you can't do that. It won't run.

You can't just copy and paste programs across different OS's without causing it to hemorrhage. You have to install the program from within the specific OS.

Wow really? That really sucks... I was planning on gifting that key to a friend since it's my last install on that one. Any estimate on the odds of MS gifting me one after I beg them? (After all, from my point of view, I'm still using the same PC ._.)

They'll tell you to go spin.

This barely qualifies for Dun dun dunnn, though btw. 32 bit programs on 64 bit host OS is native.
Err, thansk for the link, but I have my CD Key (I wrote it on the package and also saved it as a txt file). My issue is that I purchased it thru theultimatesteal, and only 3 installations are given per CD Key. I've already used it twice, and was going to give it as a gift to a friend.... So either I get it, or my good friend gets it (not a good situation either way, as we both need it).

If the next iteration of Office was out, I would jump at it and give my 2007 key away, but it won't even be out this year (and I don't want to make a purchase for soon-to-be-outdated software)

Yeah, I know about openoffice and google docs... but I'll reserve commentary. I recognize them as great freeware, even to the point that they're sometimes more compatible with Office documents than Office itself, but frankly I'd rather keep dual-booting until the next Office comes out than install OO.

Are the other two installs still being actively used?
