Hey all.
I tried my hand at upgrading my PC recently, after I saw some WD1001FALS hard drives on the cheap (something like $0.06/GB). [On the off-topic section of this post: looking for decent, cheap DDR2 memory, preferrably an 8GB (4x2GB) kit]. Incidentally, I got Win 7 Pro through MSDNAA (through IEEE membership), and I decided to go for 64 bit. I didn't do 64 bit when I initially bought my PC (in early 2007), because rumors that 64 bit drivers for Vista were lacking were abundant, as I remember.
But now most of those rumors are gone, and most PCs you configure on the web seem to have 64 bit as the default architechture. To me this signals that this time, it's coming for sure. So currently I'm dual-booting (as of this morning) with Vista 32-bit and Win 7 64-bit (awkward, huh? and installation was very fun from a thumb drive 😀).
Though I had no need to search for drivers (I must say I was impressed) I do have one qualm:
- I have some software I want to make sure I keep as I migrate to 64 bit. Mainly Photoshop Elements Suite (came with PC purchase) and Office 2007 (since the next 64 bit version won't be out this year, and I'm in college so I need it).
Luckily, Steam appears to run (even though it is 32-bit, but I think they added some emulators) so I won't be losing my Steam games. But I'm bound to dual boot until I can figure out how to run that software in 64 bit environment (P.S.: I don't think that's a good thing).
Many thanks!
