Hi . I want to know if its ok to change the orientation of the hard disk when its running, i.e , normally they are placed horizontally (flat ) in our pc. What if i put my pc case on its side so that the hard disk is now at right angles to the position it was before.

Is this a safe position to keep the hard disk when its operating. (the pc is running)?

Some cases are designed with the hard disks oriented that way.

Actually, the only thing to avoid is moving hard drives around while they are running. They are much easier to damage while operating than while powered down. Sideways is just fine but don't move it while running or you may be looking for a new drive (I lost an 80GB drive that slipped out of my hand and fell 1.5" onto a desk while running--heads were damaged and it would only click after that when powered up).

Moving them around isn't the problem, it's the impact from hitting the desk that's the killer :)

As long as there is proper airflow in the case, it is safe to run the drive upside down. Older Dells and Micron PCs that used OEM Palo Alto ATCX cases were designed to mount the second hard drive drive upside down underneath the floppy drive, and the primary hard drive vertically.

Although those cases didn't look terribly impressive (boring beige 90's design) they were actually designed and performed very well.
