It's not that you MUST, it's that you should. What you should do is have two matching dimms to run dual channel, otherwise your memory bandwidth will hurt, but if you want a system that is up and running and don't care about the performance in the mean time, well then go ahead. Basically, IT WILL RUN, IT'S NOT ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED TO HAVE DUAL CHANNEL.
