Running Cat5 underground?

I'm in a room that gets a very low wireless signal outside of my house and I would just lioke to run a 75 ft cat 5 cable out here to my xbox.

would it fine to bury the cable or do I have to find a way to get a wireless signal in here? I have tried 3 different routers, extenders, etc. I've given up. Wireless just can't go through tin!

I was looking at these CABLES
 
Where is this wireless signal coming from? And how does your room get outside the house to get a wireless signal? (That's the way the sentence actually reads. 🙂)
 
Ah. Well if he runs a cable, don't forget to Dig Safe. 🙂

Using a booster station mounted outside, or a USB wireless adapter with an antenna you can put outside, sounds like the best idea though. With a buried cable you'll have to watch for it coming back up out of the ground, depending on what the soil is like where you live.

You might also want to use PVC conduit to run the wire. Makes it easier to run it, you can run other wires if you want, easily fix it if anything happens, no exposure to the elements.
 
Well If you do plan on burying the CAT-5 you will probably want to put it is some conduit. Something like Liquid Tight Conduit Link with proper liquid tight connectors. You could also probably use the stick form of the PVC conduit Link and it would be cheaper than the flexible stuff but you will have to cut and glue it together with the PVC pipe glue.
 
I wouldn't run it under the ground. Either stay wireless, run fiber, or go VPN. It's not safe to bury Cat 5 under the ground. I wouldn't risk my life, and my equipment.

How exactly do you "go VPN" without a network connection via wireless or wire? And how exactly is it "not safe" to bury cable?

by a wireless router inside my house which is ~50 ft away. Just outside the room it puts off a 100% signal, but inside this room I'm lucky to see 2/5 or 1/5 bars which is really limiting my connection. I do like the PVC conduit idea, but would defintiely prefer a cheaper alternative

I've read of electric build up due to the moisture in the ground causing enough voltage to kill someone, and take out equipment. I wouldn't even trust a pipe to be honest. Get a better antenna for your wireless, go fiber, or get a VPN with good internet speeds.

so all of the electical companies around here are going to kill people becaue our electricity is underground???? where have you read this info? also, do you know a vpn is? how can he get a vpn without a connection?

Yeah because Cat 5 cable is what carries electricity right? I was just naming the best ways to link two buildings together. I thought he had internet in both places, and was trying to link them together.

If you are going to recommend this guy run this stuff underground you should pony up the cash to replace his Xbox also.

That seems odd. Most of our area is all underground utilities - gas, electric, cable TV, phone, etc. No one has ever died from it nor even gotten a tingle.

Be careful of what you read and make sure the source doesn't have some wierd agenda. Evermore's suggestion of a PVC conduit is on the mark. Would make changes, additions or corrections easier.

Maybe you should take the "tech" out of your username... I barely got through my high school electrical engineering class 12 years ago and I know you're completely wrong. Electricity doesn't "build up" in the ground. There's a reason it's called "earthing" and "grounding"; it's because the ground is ALWAYS where electricity is trying to get. If any electrical transfer happens, it'd be from the cable to the earth, not the other way around. And moisture doesn't cause static buildup. The more moisture there is, the less static builds.

Cat5 cable's internal wires are also coated with PVC, which doesn't conduct electricity, and then the bundle is covered with another sheath. Unless there were a break in the line, electricity isn't getting through.

You wouldn't trust a conduit? The thing that's been used for electrical cabling and underground cable for the last oh, 75 years or so?

Here is my issue with that, y run fiber and not cat5? and second how are you going to get a VPN with good internet speeds, but there is no connection? Now what would be poss is if he had cable out there to get a nother cable mdm if he is using cable in the firstplace and do that.. there is no issue with running cat5 underground in this manner..

Doesn't CAT5e only have like 12v and barely any amps? That wouldn't even kill a skin cell.

lol Lord Evermore I too was baffled by Bradtechonline's response.

I would just run the CAT5e in some PVC cond. really in like 5 years when the cable is possible getting screwy there will be better Wireless available and you probably will have switched over by then.

Networking forum would have been better for this.
Ethernet is a 1 volt signal.
The problem with using copper between buildings is called ground potential.
The fact that your building has metal walls would make this even worse.
Running copper for ethernet between buildings is a big no-no!
