Running is hard on your hips, knees and ankles, yes. But it only strains your heart as much as any other cardio. Swimming is a great suggestion.

Weight training is good also because it builds muscle. More muscle = higher metabolism = more fat loss (not weight loss).

..running has made knee and hip joint replacement a growth industry. I was amazed to find out top of the line replacement joints only have a 10 year service life. Then they have to be replaced again. And some of the early knee/hip replacement joints had to be recalled due to defects.

strains your heart? sure, but in a good way. It strengthens it just like any other muscle.

Is it true that humans are naturally long distance runners? I'd say it's more likely that we're long distance walkers.
