Running a monitor at over its rated refresh rate?

Jeez I didn't know you could up the refresh rate for monitors past its limits, is there a special "monitor OCing" program that you use? My HP maxes out at 75 for 12x10 and you can't change it.

Most newer monitors just won't display refresh rates that are above the preprogrammed limits (I'm pretty sure my Viewsonic PS790 won't, though I haven't tried it in a while, so my memory might be off). If it does let you, it may shorten the display's life, since you'll be working the electron deflection circuitry harder than it's built for.

With older monitors, you could even permanently damage them by setting the refresh/resolution way too high! The electronics would try to display the requested signal and would overheat almost immediately.

some monitors let you set it to a higher refresh rate in settings but it wont run any higher then teh max, Open up the OSD and see what it says, im suree itll still say 75Hz when you select 85Hz

Yeah I definately wouldn't do it higher than recommended.

Windows is usually the one that blocks the higher refresh rates that the monitor can't handle. The monitor reports its refresh rate capabilities when you hook the monitor to it and then windows blocks out the ones above it's capabilities. There is a check box to display the other settings though.

i wouldn't do it, if you don't like suprises that smell like silicon toast
my g220FB runs at 85Hz at 1600x1200 but at higher resolutions i hafta drop it to like72 or 74Hz or something
basically i choose not to game over resolutions which drop the refresh rate below 85Hz (1600x1200 on my monitor, usually I only run 1024x768 with 85Hz for most my games, and 1600x1200 for desktop at 85Hz)

monitors can handle higher refresh rates than rated in some obscure cases, but having out of spec Sync ranges/refresb rates is pretty much the number one killer of monitors.
i gave a 15" monitor to a friend which was rated at 1024x768 @ 65Hz
i Believe he ran it had 75 or 85Hz and burnt it out in like 2 days

good luck
