Was thinking about upgrading my sound system in a 99 Mustang. The factory sounds kinda crappy. I was wondering since I got a laptop could I maybe purchase a $100-$200 set of 4.1 PC speakers and use them in my car?

Would the car be able to handle the laptop and PC speakers and also how would I power the speakers? Power inverter? If so which should I buy?

Is this possible? I think I would save allot of money going this route and the sound be much better than factory. Also any ideas on how to mount the Laptop? Also should I power it through the cigarette lighter?

IMO if it will work I think it would be much easier to hookup the laptop/PC speakers. Not to mention the laptop will allow me to choose music much easier. But not sure if its possible to power them.

i think for what you're using it for, it'll be easier to keep the laptop in, but find some way to output your sound into your car speakers (a lot of newer cars have a auxiliary 3.5mm jack input for this sole purpose). other options to get sound through your car speakers are fm transmitters or the old school tape adapters.. keep in mind that a direct 3.5mm input is top quality, tape adapters will get you tape quality at best, and fm transmitting will get you the least quality (fm quality) sound.

this may possibly beat the ghettoness of having 4.1's pc speakers in your car with wires all over the place?

[edit]: just read it was a '99 stang.. so it may not have the 3.5mm jack available.. most not super new cars still have it behind the actual head unit system. if you know how to get the panel open and rewire it, you can bring the auxiliary wire (many cars have this whether or not it is readily available in the front) out and purchase a 3.5mm adapter to plug your laptop in.

get some car speakers and a new head unit with auxilary input. Hook up your laptop to it and get an inverter so you don't have to worry about the battery. Should run about $300-400.
