Anyone here ever ran a server behind a router/firewall? I am trying to run a Action Quake 2 Server so me and my bro can play. He isnt in the same house so I have to make a working server over the net. I tried to once. I tried disabling firewall for the PC thats running the server under DMZ also tried forwarding port 27910. But my server just doesnt show up on his PC.

Linksys 4 port

Any ideas?

To run a game server you need a strong leash and a good pair of robotic legs. You might also have to open a different port, but I don't know about that.

go to setup > status. your gateway not the 192.x.x.x nubmers, but your REAL ip must be given to connect to. also forward the port(s) and dmz if you have to.

I'm new to this stuff. How would I get gamespy arcade to show my server? Also what does the gateway IP do? Wouldnt I want to give the IP?

try forwarding the specified port and disable SPI. not sure how it affects DMZ, but when SPI is enabled, it disables all port forwarding.

yup, the ip that the router assigns you. is that with SPI disabled under the Advanced --> Filters tab?

it's been a long time since i messed with quake2, how exactly do you connect in-game or are you using something like gamespy?

I have tried launching a server with a Quake 2 server launcher. I have also tried going into Action Quake 2/multiplayer/start multiplayer game. Neither shows my server. My bro is trying to connect straight from Action Quake 2 which is multiplayer/join game then typeing in my IP 192.xxx.x.xxx:27910. He says it shows nothing which means my connection ain't going out showing I have a server. SPI is disabled by default under my router.

So it was always disabled.

If I am playing on someone elses server I use gamespy arcade. But I want to start my own so me and my bro can play so we can choose what maps we want.

And don't forget the doo doo bags if your city requires that you pick up the messes :)

Seriously though, port forwarding your IP/Port like mentioned previous is important. I wouldn't recommend using the DMZ function of the Linksys unless you don't care about the data on the server - just opens too much up to the world.

I run a dedicated CS server behind a Linksys BEFSr41 II Router. I give the server a static IP, list the IP and ports in the "Forwarding" page of the "Advanced" options and leave everything else about the router set up as default (changing password of course).

Something that stopped me early on, was my firewall. If you run ZonAlarm or similar - you'll need to make sure you allow the appropriate traffic AND server traffic. Just disabling or exiting the firewall doesn't always do it.

I contacted Sierra and read the Valve forum postings related to HL and CS Dedicated servers. The regulars there have posted detailed "How to" instructions on the Linksys and running a server. I'm sure you can find an ID or Quake user forum that would more specifically do the same.

Good Luck! It's a rewarding experience :)

ok for example if you are a running a cable server - 24.xx.xx.xx - and that is your connection that you give to the router.

you would forward ports on the server's ip - lets say 192.168.1.12. forward the appropriate port(s), or even DMZ it.

then simply give your friend the 24.xx.xx.xx number, followed by the port that he needs to connect to.

so it would be 24.xx.xx.xx:yyyyy.

Simple as that.

Could the problem be that is you have dynamic ip you have to assign the range and not the ip because it will be different next time, or you have to assign a static IP. Don't know, just a thought.
