Rune - good game

Hi all,
Despite what all the critics say, I think this a is a good game.

There are parts that can look the same but overall the game, the weapons and graphics are great. I haven't had this much fun slashing my way through a level in a while.

You definitely get your money's worth. The levels are pretty long.

Your thoughts.

Some games, even though they get mediocre reviews, just downright appeal to us anyway. It seems Rune is one of these games -- I've heard other people really like this one. I played the demo and the game did absolutely nothing for me. But that's me!

FPS melee games running at the gamespeed of Rune will never work. I like the concept, though. You need to slowdown gameplay in order to allow time for specific attacks necessary to make melee combat believable and effective. It's not terribly fun to press LEFT CLICK and see your axe slice from different angles but effectively do the same thing each time. Rune has a couple of moves, weapons can hit each other, and there are shields. Too kill zombines you must decapitate them. But this is far too simplistic. But complicated games don't sell so you may never see a good melee combat game.

I don't know how Rune plays, but for a revolutionary game of it's time that never took off, check out Die By The Sword by Interplay.

I think I remember that one. Not exactly why it didn't do well but I assume there was a better reason than "it didn't play fast enough for the kids". 🙂 ....actually I seem to remember something about difficult control, perhaps that was it.

Acutally, you can change the game speed in Rune... from slowmo to stupididly fast 🙂

It does doesn't it? Sheesh, I should have remembered that. Still I only played the demo once so some slack is in order. 😉

I'd like to see a game with the intricacies of, say, fencing. Rune is a "click and kill" game...kinda like Diablo. No strategy required. Obi-wan might have attempted this with that mouse-glyph system...but the game was canceled so we'll never know. 🙁

JellyBaby... I sort of have to disagree there... there is some sort of strategy in Rune. I would consider myself pretty good at it. One guy accused me of cheating because I killed him 20 times in a row, then I played another game where I was consistently beaten!

There are many factors in Rune that I think take strategy :

-Knowing the swing arc combos of your weapon
ie. Viking axe double click will produce forward slash the r-l cross slash.

-timing... attack too soon and your toast

-knowing the other guys weakness. The more guys I play against I start to see suttle differences between their strategies... I love dueling the guys that start with the jump attack. A little sidestep and doubleswing with goblin axe and they are done 🙂

I can see how it could have been more detailed though. I think mounts would have been interesting, same with bows.

Don't know why I am defending a game that I have played the demo of 😉 I do understand why it might not be everyones cup of tea... btw, I don't like Q3 that much 🙂

I just finished FAAK2 and Elite Force so this hack and slash game along with Alice is currently occupying my time.

Its good mindless fun. How many games can you say that to.

The problem is not the number of games that give you "good mindless fun" it's the fact that nearly all games nowadays offer only good mindless fun. To be honest, and I've felt this way for many years, I'd like to see some "good mindfull fun" out there. Star Fleet Command 2 is coming at least. 🙂

Jellybaby, I too love complicated games, but since school is getting hectic and when I'm not in school I'm working; It's nice to play a simple game for half an hour.

I used to be a huge Civ II fan, but now I have to a book a couple days off if I want to play it... no I can't limit myself to a few turns a day. When I play Civ it's all or nothing 🙂

Same goes for the complex RPG's out there.
