I have a problem I have been fighting for a long while. I first noticed that certain web pages would cause IE to close suddenly. I have not been able to determine any corrilation between the pages and why it closes. It can be an MSN news page, a forum page or anything. I am able to go to secure sights ok, Java enabled sites and others. The I noticed that when I click on the "RUN" command box, it pops up for a second and then closes suddenly. Also if I do a search in IE with the word "run"" it causes the IE to close. It does not matter if I'm at google, msn, or yahoo. As soon as I do a search with the word "run" it closes the browser.

I have ran several spyware and virus scanners. I used hijackthis to remove IE addons. I think I deleted my blocked host files also, if I did it right. I have XP pro with SP2 and all the updates. I have done many web searches but came up empty.

If you hav used the suggestions stickied at the top of this forum to no availe, then bite the bullet.

Back up datafiles, wipe the drive, re-install offline, install firewall and AV systems and connect, get current versions/updates and then practice safe surfing after this point.

I have had situations where that was the only way to recover; something was screwing up the browser royally to the point that I could not work effectively

I'm trying to find the fix and avoid that. This computer is the control computer for an internet cafe and cannot be taken offline for any extended period. I does not see a lot of risky internet usage. Also IE crashed when opening THIS page. I had to go to another computer to view it. I can use it for weeks without problem. This problem seems to happen whenever the word "run" is involved.

I am going to try another virus scanner. Panda this time. Norton and AVG found nothing as has ad_aware and Spybot search and destroy.

I'd say...
Boot to safe mode w/networking
Then run Housecall and see if it finds anything.
You can also run Panda if you'd like (since you already mentioned it)
Also download MS Antispyware beta... you'll have to boot back into normal mode to install/run it though.

Excellent example of why having clean backups is a requirements for critical computers.

Risky usage may not happen, however, it only takes one OOPS to nail you. And the Oops makers are getting sneakier all the time.

Another option is to create a second computer using proper procedures and then just swap it into the network. Minimal down time.

Good Luck

I will try house call tonight. It just seems funny that anything with the word "run" will cause IE to close. I have found many people with simular complaints but not one fix so far. Unless house call works

This computer is setup raid 0, which means nothing more then I have 2 hard drives with this malfunction. Also everything is backup to USB hard drive. I have an Identical computer so maybe I will set up a hard drive in it to transfer over if I have to. It has not been a big problem to this point, but it could ge tthat way.
