year ago today, the Bush Administration was making its final push toward war in Iraq. We know now that much of what we were told about the threat that Iraq posed was untrue. And rather than own up to their distortion of the facts, Bush administration officials are denying they ever said such things.

But this Sunday, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld got caught blatantly contradicting his past statements, and we have the video clip. You can check it out at:

http://www.moveon.org/censure/caughtonvideo/

Congress' responsibility is to hold President Bush and his administration accountable for this pattern of deception -- that's why we have the Constitution. But instead, Congress today will debate a resolution congratulating Bush, for (they claim) making the world safer.

We must demand, at a minimum, that Congress censure the President. It's our Representatives' duty to formally reprimand him for misleading us. And we've got to demand it today, while they're debating their anniversary resolution.

Please call your Representative now.

Make it clear that you are a constituent, then let the staffers know you expect nothing less than Censure.

So you dispute the veracity of the video?

I didn't watch it because 1.) I didn't like the way the original poster prefaced his argument and 2.) I wouldn't watch anything from moveon.org....

Watch it, it's interesting. One of the best ways to understand an opponent is to read his newspapers.

Cheers!

Galt:

Don't worry about the neighborhood. IQs around here by those truly burying their heads in the sand couldn't drop any lower without becoming a negative number.

...assuming one wants to understand "an opponent." I refuse to read the LA TImes and NYT, though I will read the Washington Post, for as long as I can stomach the loaded arguments. I even watch the Communist News Network for time to time. :)

Moveon.org stuff, though? I'll pass, sir....thanks anyway.

Well, yes. But only from my kids, and that's scary because I don't have kids yet.

I'll paraphrase the clip from my memory:

Reporter reads two quotes of Rummy saying: 1) Saying threat wasn't imminent may not have been so (how's that for Clintonian jargon)
2) The threat was imminent

The depths some will go to delude themselves is astonishing. It makes me want to be a psychologist.

Well John, like the poster said its not a MoveOn.org made video, its from Face the Nation.

So here's a transcript (I assume you can read this as its not located on the MoveOn.org server)

===============

Sec. Rumsfeld: Well, you're the--you and a few other critics are the only people I've heard use the phrase `"immediate threat." I didn't. The president didn't. And, uh, it's become kind of folklore that that's--that's what's happened. The president went...

Schieffer: You're saying that nobody in the administration said that.

Sec. Rumsfeld: I--I can't speak for nobody--everybody in the administration and say nobody said that.

Schieffer: Vice president didn't say that? The...

Sec. Rumsfeld: Not--if--if you have any citations, I'd like to see 'em.

Friedman: We have one here. It says "some have argued that the nu"--this is you speaking--"that the nuclear threat from Iraq is not imminent, that Saddam is at least five to seven years away from having nuclear weapons. I would not be so certain."

Sec. Rumsfeld: And--and...

Friedman: It was close to imminent.

Sec. Rumsfeld: Well, I've--I've tried to be precise, and I've tried to be accurate. I'm s--suppose I've...

Friedman: "No terrorist state poses a greater or more immediate threat to the security of our people and the stability of the world and the regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq."

Sec. Rumsfeld: Mm-hmm. It--my view of--of the situation was that he--he had--we--we believe, the best intelligence that we had and other countries had and that--that we believed and we still do not know--we will know

Notice Galt doesn't ever read or listen to anything that might challenge his perceptions? And when someone calls him on it... he changes the subject! How conservative! :D
