Sources all over Taiwan confirm that Dell is going to launch more AMD based systems, although they would not tell us exactly which lines. You can hide products until launch day, but you have to order parts some time, and there are no secrets in Taiwan

Last week they announced their "next generation of servers" based on woodcrest.

I think people are a bit clueless about the entire Dell thing. This forum as an example, there are people who want AMD no matter what Intel does, and Dell wanted in on those opportunities. They're not selling AMD systems to their Intel customers; they are just expanding their customer base to those that prefer AMD. There's nothing to be read into it one way or the other.

I sort of agree with this...but it's been my experience that most professional customers don't really care if it's Intel or AMD per se, as long as it meets their requirements. There have been some issues with Dell in that the IT department has wanted Opteron for their servers for some very specific reasons, but senior management had negotiated a long-term contract with Dell because of price...
My understanding is that Dell has been losing a number of those contracts recently (they aren't re-signing). This has been most prevelant in the 4P server area where they've been losing a huge amount of business to HP and the DL585...

I think that is my point. Its not like Dell is replacing Intel with AMD, or that they are pushing AMD. They just want to accommodate customers that insist on AMD, and have something to offer them.

Of course I'm sure that Dell will have to pay a bit more for Woodcrests and Conroes now, so the strategy may backfire in the long run. It seems a bit odd for them to start selling AMD 2 months before AMD loses its appeal as the market leader.

In the 4P systems, AMD will continue to be the market leader for quite some time...the 4P Woodcrests aren't coming out until mid-2007.

I agree....I was going to say, this couldn't have been more of an inconvenient time for dell to pull such a move.

Yea the timing of this all would be interesting if true. The best time for Dell to switch probably would have been a year ago where the performance gap between AMD's offerings and Intel's offerings was the greatest.

Of course this is all rumor so far; remember Charlie D. from The Inq also speculated that AMD was "for sure" going to buy ATI and that it was going to be announced around the Computex timeframe..

I always thought that Dell moving to AMD 12-18 months ago made sense with AMD's superior performance. This would be in the server and enthusiast market and not mainstream where Intel chips would make more sense for them. Now, with Intel's Conroe coming out which should largely erase AMD's performance edge if not reverse AMD and Intel's positions, Dell is moving some of it's products to AMD. I think this is more on pressure from buyers not buying Dell servers and movin to HP and others for Opteron servers. This means Dell is losing sales in those areas and prompted the move to AMD servers. I still do not see Dell moving it's mainstream products to AMD any time soon.

my wishful thinking:

fact is that Dell has humongous buying power. that's why they can offer comps at extremely low prices. If they offer AMD desktop at these outrageous prices they're offering for current Intel based systems, I'm sure MOST of online users would buy those dell Dimension AMD , numbers might not be much, but it sure is increasing with more people getting used to AMD name and performance.

how about $399 Sempron 3400+ system with 17" just like dimension 1100 with celeron D .. 99 out of 100 will pick sempron.

but then again, it's only my wishful thoughts :p

It looks like this rumour has legs...

Citigroup Research is now weighing in:

"Citigroup Investment Research has confirmed from industry sources that Dell will offer an AMD based desktop in September of this year."

In the 4P systems, AMD will continue to be the market leader for quite some time...the 4P Woodcrests aren't coming out until mid-2007.

The mobos I've seen so far are 4P (2 x dual core). What are you referring to specifically?

Viditor is far, far from objective. And while informative, a great deal of what he presents as "facts" are just plain wrong.

I have in the past given him credit for being a very good writer, and he is a master of distraction. Notice how he will change the subject when he is challenged on point. That is a sign of very good politician.

Does this mean Dell will get or order fewer Intel Core Duo processors? Specifically Conroes? More for the channel.
