Rumors that Jason Kidd might go to Dallas..

Why would Dallas be interested in Kidd when they let him go in the first place? They already have two good point guards, Nash and Van Excel.

They didn't let him go - they traded him. Ironic that they traded him for Steve Nash and some other nobody. And back in the day, the Mavericks would have gotten NO WHERE with the 3 J's - regardless of how good Kidd is now, he never would have had the chance to develop and take the Mavs beyond the cellar basement with the team they had - the firesale the Mavs had a couple years back where every player was traded or cut was the best thing to ever happen to them, and the best thing to happen to Kidd as well.

Honestly, I'd love to see Kidd back in the Mavs uniform. Nash can't be counted on when it counts. Van Exel is great but I can't see him taking charge like Kidd could. What the Mavs need more than anything is a big man inside for defense and rebounds. But if anyone can get Kidd to the Mavs, it's Mark Cuban. He's probably talking him up at the celebrity golf tourney as we speak.

Supposedly Cuban and Nelson have made it a priority to improve their perimeter defense during the offseason. Kidd is a much better defender than Nash. Since Nash makes only 5 million and it is likely Kidd will make $16million per season, Dallas is expected to unload either Lafrentz or Bradley also to get rid of some salary.

Personally, I am not sure I would make the trade. Kidd is a bad shooter, Nash easily beats him there. But, Kidd does run the break better and is a better rebounder and defender. It would be like upgrading from the 3rd best point guard to the best point guard, and it is likely with Van Exel, Finley, and Nowitzki that the Mavs could lose a little scoring to get Kidd. The problem I have with it is salary. If I am correct (I'm not good at cap-onomics), Kidd would get a $98million deal that would be doubled because the Mavs are in the luxury tax. $200 million is a heckuva lot to pay for a position that is *not* a weak spot on your team.

If they unloaded both LaFrentz and Bradley, salary wouldn't be a problem. Kidd has the option of becoming a free agent in this off season and his option for the next year is $11 million iirc - obviously he's going to want the money but he's going to want the ring and the success more than that - I think he'd be willing to take a cut if that means going to a winning team.

how are they going to juggle kidd, nash and van exel?
we all know van exel is going to bitch about minutes.

Yes, they're both fine point guards, but neither has the leadership abilities that Kidd does. Nash was non existant in the playoffs. Kidd led his team the entire way. Dirk and Finley and Van Exel can all hit from almost anywhere on the court - the benefits would outweigh the drawbacks by swapping Kidd for Nash.

I wouldn't say Nash was non-existant in the playoffs. He actually had a better year this year than last year. But you are right, Kidd is better in the playoffs and so is Van Exel, imo.

it's all just rumors. trading for nash wouldn't help dallas much at all. i think sacramento has a better chance at getting him.

Woah there. Nash is major clutch (did you see his game aganist Portland throwing up those 3's forcing overtime), although I do agree hes not much of a leader and definitely streaky.

Van Exel does take charge and was the biggest reason the Mavs were able to get past the Kings (other than Webber's injury). Furthermore, I can't believe hes a bench a player when in so many other teams he would probably be the #1 threat.

However, I still do believe taking Jason Kidd is a step up. Mavs aren't going anywhere w/ their current roster. Kidd would provide leadership and some much needed defensive skills. But is it worth it? I think they need a freakin consistent rebounder whose also a legitimate defender more.

Yea I saw/watched every Mavs game during the playoffs (that wasn't on cable). He was hot on a rare occasion when they really needed him. That's not enough to take it to the next level - they need consistency or someone with drive. But I agree with you on needing a better rebounder/inside defender more though, but this year's pickings are only alright in terms of free agents - if they want someone they'll have to trade for them. (Perhaps a good way to unload Raef or Shawn)

As a Nets fan, I want Kidd to stay. But, objectively, can say that if Kidd wants to win, he shouldn't go to Dallas. To get Kidd, Dallas would, as mentioned have to send Nash and LaFrenz. There's no way the Nets would take Bradley, so keep dreaming on that one. Anyhow, unless the Nets want to move a big man (or, say, Rodney Rogers), LaFrenz will not have a spot on their roster, so that, too, makes it unlikely.

The Sac trade sounds more realistic. Obviously Bibby replaces Kidd, and Hedo, a 'tweener, could sub for the SF and PF spots (so maybe Rodney Rogers IS on the way out?).

still no interior half-court defense and interior scoring for the mav's (errr....that can get up and down the court and stay out of foul trouble that is).

Very bad move for dallas.

Yeah. I would get rid of Raef or Shawn (or both) and packaged Van Exel if ncessary for a legitimate big man. Van Exel is good and all but hes not much of a defender either, and its just overkill to have someone with that talent to be a bench player.... ties up money for someone who doesn't play 30 min.+ day in, day out. I think the Nash + Norowitzki combo is too good to break up.

I'm not sure who the heck they would be able to trade for w/ the big men so rare though. But they desperately need someone who can get them rebounds. Norowitzki doesn't like the dirty work, and everyone else is just too small and/or wimpy.

I'm not too sure about Bibby + Hedo trade either. Bibby played one good playoff series against the Lakers and seems to be no better than average w/o Webber especially. Are those two worth it for Jason Kidd? I don't think so, but I think the Nets will take it since I believe Kidd will leave anyways, might as well get someboy in return.

Bibby is around 10 million a year, it will be moronic to sign and trade away Kidd for a sack of overrated crap.
It would be stupid for mavs to break the nash nowitzki combo. Finley is the one they should get rid of because he simply doesn't fit in. He is too much of a ballhog.
Kidd will only choose between the nets and the spurs.

what i'd heard is that nelly would've pushed for keeping kidd, but he didn't arrive until after kidd was traded. i'd also heard that he wanted to come back to dallas.

it's gonna be an interesting off-season.

Ballhog? He's toned down his game the past 2 years to give Dirk and Nash a chance to develop more. Look at his yearly stats and percentages the last 2 years compared to before. He's a team player. Nash is far more expendable than Finley is, especially considering Van xel's play in the post season. Kidd has a lot more options to choose b/t than just the Nets and Spurs.

This trade has no bearing on getting a big man. The Mavs, currently, are over the soft NBA cap. They can only use their low and mid-level exceptions to sign players. That is why they are talking about Malone, PJ Brown, and Zo. In a sign and trade, however, they can get a $16million player as long as they match outgoing salaries by +/- 15%. So if NJ signs Kidd, then trades for Nash and say Lafrentz or two others like Bradley and Eschemeyer, then the salaries would likely be close enough to work. This trade would not affect the Mavs ability to use those low and mid-level exceptions, however. Exception means you can use them regardless of your salary cap number. So, with or without this trade, the Mavs have the exact same choices on getting a big man through a sign and trade or via the mid-level exception. I would also like to point out that it is widely believed Kidd is a better defender than Nash, and that could mean potentially far less drives in the lane by opposing point guards. This alone would make the Mavs defense more effective. If you watch their games, not only do the big guys score in the lane, but the likes of Marbury and Bibby are making layups and short shots also.

Even though Kidd had expressed interest in staying Jersey, he will not stay. He wants to go to a champship caliber team, which eliminates all Eastern Conference teams. That leaves the Spurs, Sacramento, Dallas, and the Lakers. Had the Spurs not won the champship, they may pursue Kidd but Tony Parker is younger and is rapidly developing into a great PG. Dallas could trade away Nash and bring in Kidd but I'm not sure they're fixing anything that's currently broken. They should sign a decent small forward or a center instead. I doubt Kidd will come to the Lakers for the mid-level salary exception. Kidd won't sign with the Warriors or the Sonics because their chances of winning the championship is next to none.

His best fit would be in Sacramento. Bibby is over-rated and they can afford to get rid of him. It's Sacramento or Dallas for sure.
