I just found out tonight that the reason why I did not get an offer probably from two law firms last summer was because of a rumor perpetuated by someone about my character.
Indeed, someone frabricated a story about me manipulating someone elses document, and then an associate asked me about it. He told me that they had investigated it and found out it wasn't true, but he wanted to know who would want to say such awful things about me and if I had any "enemies". I was caught off guard by this and wasn't sure why anyone would say such a thing. Keep in mind this associate had made some sexually inappropriate comments to me earlier.
After some time, I figured out the origin of where this false story could have come from: a dinner where a gropu of summer associates and associates were talking about an idea for a reality TV show for summer associates. It was going to be a blend of "The Apprentice" and "Survivor". I made a comment about how I had thought I had lost a document earlier that day, but it turns out I had saved it under a different name, and that one of our cut throat TV characters could do something like that, i.e. akin to the dude who put matches in his butt. What I think happened was a twisted game of telephone, when one person relays a phrase he heard, and by the end of the line, it gets completely twisted.
Well, even though I talked to the partner about how I think this bizzare accusation must have come from a dinner conversation about a reality TV show, this rumor still seems to haunt me, and is being perpetuated by people that I summered with. This person also told a friend of mine that I had done all these horrible things, slept around with other summer associates and bragged about it, and there were definite questions about my ethical character. Someone has clearly besmirched my name. I don't know who it is, and why they would do this. I have not provoked the wrath of anyone that I know, but this is truly messed up. Kharma will get them in the end, but for the present, what do I do? This effecting my credibility and ability to get a job.
