Rumors about an Ipod Touch with 3g connectivity?

I've seen/read about this a couple of times now, it would be seriously cool if they did that.

I would consider one just to have a back up device. I currently have Verizon, and if my phone croaks, I'm screwed, would love a Skype enabled 3G iPod Touch (and my iPad unlimited data plan, I've kept active since the gen 1 iPad)

Wonder if they'd have 3g and non 3g versions - and what the price premium would be.

Sigh. . . hate waiting.

You're still probably looking at ~$100 3G upgrade, because it will use the SAME board/chipset. You'd also get GPS from the chip.

I'm going to wait for it - and if it does not come out - hopefully there will be a 7in android tablet on the horizon that will do what I want. Would love the GPS thing for my bike riding, too. I just absolutely refuse to pay 100$ a month for phone service.

Only way this gets released is if the plans are just as or even more expensive than regular smartphone plans. The carriers aren't dumb, they know the younger generation doesn't give a crap about actual phone calls, they just want to consume data and send emails and texts (hello Google Voice?). If I was a greedy exec at Verizon/AT&T, I would see this as nothing more than a way for customers to get out of paying for voice minutes.
