The Wii should be $99, because it's just a GameCube with Waggle.

And a BMW should be $16k loaded and a 50" Sony Bravia LCD should be $600.

And if people stopped buying them, you can be sure they would be.

Fail analogy fails. BMWs are a luxury car with niceties, build quality and features that other, cheaper cars don't have. The Wii is literally a GameCube with a gimmicky control scheme.

Analogy succeeds in that both are priced 80-100% more than what they cost to produce because they are sold in a market that allows for massive profits for that approach.

If you truly think that Nintendo is only making an 80-100% profit on the Wii, I have some "waterfront property" in Georgia to sell you. :p

The GameCube sold for $99 years ago, and I doubt Nintendo was taking a loss on them, even back then. Since the Wii is literally a GameCube with a Waggle remote, the profit margins for Nintendo at $249 are probably closer to 200-300%.

But hey, if you like overpaying for gimmicks, keep on keepin' on!

I'll be doing that as soon as this price drop hits. Hell I paid 100 bucks for a wireless adaptor for my 360! Let's not even talk about the hd prices there. Which is more overpriced again?

(I have both 360/PS3 btw)

Most of the "waterfront property" you hear advertised on the radio is swamplands. Come on Queasy...you should know this! :p

Did I ever say that the 360 accessories weren't overpriced?

What does this have to do with the discussion on how much the Wii system costs and how much profit Nintendo makes on each unit sold?

Besides, the common practice in the industry since pretty much the beginning has been to take a loss on the system and make a profit on the accessories + games. Nintendo is double-dipping with the Wii, and good for them! If they can make bank on gouging the ignorant consumers, more power to them!

Everyone always says this, but I've only ever seen proof that Sony and Microsoft do it. I thought I read back when the Wii came out that Nintendo has always sold their systems for a profit from the start, but googling didn't turn up the quote. There's also Sega and Atari; I haven't heard that they sold their consoles for a loss, at least prior to the Dreamcast.

If by "literally" you mean "not at all literally," you are correct sir.

True, it's actually less powerful than a GameCube...it couldn't even properly handle the Metroid Prime games! Check out the Kotaku article, YouTubes, etc. of the Wii Metroid Prime Trilogy having blurrier textures, more jaggies, etc.

Also, are you trying to say that the Wii isn't merely an extension of the GameCube platform? Because, Nintendo and the rest of the games industry that knows it is would like to have a word with you. :p

Do you think that these two statements are equivalent?

1. The Wii is an extension of the GameCube platform
2. The Wii is literally a GameCube with waggle controls

If not, why would you assume I disagreed with both because I disagree with one? Say what you mean, mean what you say. The first statement is correct, the second is not. There's nothing wrong with using the same hardware architecture for multiple generations, in fact it is in some ways preferable.

Technically, it is literally a GameCube with Waggle, just slightly more powerful. I exaggerated, yes. :p

I totally disagree about using the same hardware from generation to generation. Why didn't we just stick with the NES? After all, there's nothing wrong with it, and in some ways, it would have been preferable.

Except...there's this thing called progress, moving forward, advancing, etc.

You can advance without completely changing the architecture every generation - Intel does that pretty well with its line of desktop CPUs.

What the hell are you rambling about? People pay for things they enjoy. Apparently people enjoy playing the Wii (or at least buying it). Just because you don't find the fun value to equal the purchasing price for YOU doesn't make them any more ignorant than your statement.

You're the one who brought accessories into the discussion about consoles...

Also, many people are very poor at objectively analyzing the cost/price of an item, instead they go entirely on emotional urges, "Ooo neat! Gotta have it now!"

I want a Wii, because there is some fun to be had there, and it'd be great for family and friends, but I can look at what the Wii actually is and see that it is way overpriced.

You're the one getting all upset and emotional over a game console. I just analyze the facts and see the truth. For what it is, the Wii is way overpriced. Some people are willing to pay that price. I think it's foolish but hey, a fool and their money are soon parted. :)

Overpriced = A price in which consumers are unwilling to pay for the good/service being offered.

The Wii seems to have been priced since day 1 at a price LOTS of consumers are willing to pay. A price drop means more consumers would be willing to buy.

I am not being emotional at all. :p You have your opinion and I disagree with it. Doesn't mean I'm emotional. The facts are that the Wii, for good or bad in terms of the industry, has owned all of the current consoles. And yet I still don't own one. I need to own one though because I don't have a Gamecube any more but do want to play Eternal Darkness again!

What exactly comes in the box with the Wii? Maybe a better question is if I buy a Wii, what else do I need to buy?

As of right now, system, wii sports (game), controller, nunchuck, power adapter, and composite cables.. What else do you "need"? Probably nothing..

I would recommended extra controller/nunchucks (obviously).. Component cables (monoprice), and rechargable batteries for the wii-motes.

unless nintendo drastic improves their hardware, graphics and game library, the Wii will be the last nintendo console i own.
i've had the original NES, SNES, N64, GC and wii.
