Buddy of mine who is usually right about 90% of the time is telling me that the R600 was designed with Multi-Core in mind like the AMD cpu's were originally designed.

Can anyone confirm ATI may have liscenced a technology like hypertransport?

If this is true we may see a multi core R600 by the end of 2006 or even earlier.

Why would they license anything like HT?
They have had built into their chips the option for multiple cores to be linked together since the R300 at least.

More recently ATI have also got into multi-chip rendering systems as their high end parts since R300 have been designed to scale to a maximum of 256 chips in a single rendering system

If the interconnects are old news then why havent they used it?

My bud seems to think that the R600 design will go dual core and thats why they moved to 90nm more than needing a die shrink.

He also mentioned a slightly larger raptor drive in on the way with SATA-2 interface and 32meg cache. 96gig I believe so dont expect a big jump. He said this right before they had a mail in rebate which makes sense because they would want to reduce inventory before a newer release.

it is only a logical step. was not a ATI spokesman saying about them doing research into this about 18 months ago. I'm sure Nvidia are planning on going dual core aswell sometime soon. This will also solidify the rumour that Ati are planning to tyake on PPU's when they come out.
Also it would make sence to add different types of GPU on one card. In another thread there was talk of the old Bit boys with embeded ram. how abouts new embeded ram in GPu's that will increase performance in AA and HDR.

As much sense ass it might make, it's only a rumour.

As for the Pr pumped out by ATI spokes people, how much faith can be put in it?
Don't get me wrong, I love aTI, but I must say my faith in their planned releases has dwindled in the last six months or so.

I think bitboys have released more stuff than ATI lately. Sorry if I offended anyone who is a fan but next year should be a different story. Im pretty dissapointed with this round and looking forward to both ATI and NVIDIA next gen. But if dual cores are coming from either party I might be able to hold out long enough for one.

hey! dont diss voodoo, how many old ass voodoo2 sli age cards run dioom 3 playably at 640x480 and 800x600 lowest settings? Some guys with voodoo2 sli rigs got 30-35fps with doom 3 at 640x480 i think. voodoo was too good for it's time. :(

Let me correct myself Im not 100% dissaspointed with thier technolgy release but with their pricing. Its dissapointing when for $300 I can buy a whole game machine that is more powerfull than I can get for $300 on my pc.

Game developers must be pretty peeved because it really limits sales. Quake 4 would probably sell a lot better if everyone could play the game in full splendor however thier market is pretty limited on the PC. I wont buy a lot of new games because I would have to play a lot of them at low resolutions to get decent framerates and I am certainly not upgrading to play about 3 games. When I upgrade early next year those games will be about $20.00 hardly the profit of the games when they were released. Could be why we see more developers going toward consoles than the PC market. I dont think people are upgrading PC nearly as much as they used to. So I assume games are being developed around the consoles then ported to PC's which explains why a lot of them dont look cutting edge like Quake 4.

Much love for the voodoo cards but arent they direct x 7 limited? If so how are they playing doom 3 at decent framerates? got links? If so I will break out my old Voodoo 2 card and slap it into a PC for the heck of it.

Im anxiously awaiting some Physics cards and games but I dont think they will take off until late next year at earliest.

does it really matter? 3d rendering is already split into lots of simultainious calculations, so wether we get a 32-pipe core or 2x16 won't matter too much. But with the 512-bit ringbus memory controller, multicore GPU's sounds likely.

That really doesn't make much sense. Graphics rendering is already effectively infinitely parallel, which is what lead to the development of pipelined rendering. It's not like CPUs where we're facing some clockspeed hurdle that requires we build out, and when we do build out we're not hitting any problems similar to instruction-level-parallelism since rendering is infinitely parallel. So why would be build a GPU with two cores, when we could just build a GPU with more pipelines?

ATi released the XL 2 days late. ATi released the XT 3 days early. NV relesaed the 512mb GTX a few days early too, not that they are actually available anywhere though.

If you're going to complain about one, complain about them both, and dont be one-sided.
