Rumor: October 1 Microsoft dropping Online Updates?

Why would they do this exactly though, it seems they are going for all their stuff online, registration, service packs, etc, why would they cut that off all of a sudden?

I think this would be a major step backwards for Microsoft. They would have to go on a hiring spree to screen applications and registrations prior to sending each individual a requested "fix pack".

Windows XP has windows update built in, it's released at the end of October, that'll make windows update obsolete...

Not going to happen!

what about those not using XP?
doesn't sound likely!

<< No. I could believe charging for it, though. 😉 >>

Most likely scenario...

1) They are gonna charge for it... via say a small subscription

2) TO take their ANTI-PIRACY think ONE STEP further, you are gonna need a code to access the updates... so you will have to type in a Windows XP license code in order to access the updates..

They probably want to totally deny updates to people running pirated copies of the OS, and require a valid license to access updates.

<< Must of got WinXP perfect then. 😛 Muhahah!! >>

haha... funniest words I've heard all day!

Ditto!
Even Linux, after about 300 (a rough guess) kernel updates, is far from perfect. It will take Microsoft another five major Windows releases before they might even come close to Linux as it is today.

You know that even if you have to have a code to update it the pirates will figure out some way to make it work. At least I hope so.
