i think from the specs this gtx660, if truly the real specs, will not be that much weaker than the 670. overclocked it will probably match the 670 or be darn close to it.

On another note, if the gk104 wasnt outselling AMDs competing chips you would not see all the action we have. New ghz 7970 and AMD dropping prices so very low that there are threads popping up asking, "why are nvidia cards so high? I dont get it? how can they sell their cards at higher prices?"
It has to do with the fact that AMD's CPU division is hemorrhaging and they need operating revenue.

If it was close to a 670 though, I don't get how they'd be able to sell it for only $300 though?

exactly. Nvidia's not a charity. If its close to a 670 expect $325-$350. It better well damn be cause i just ordered my 670 last week!!!!!>< Mind you, i got a custom cooled Gigabyte Windforce 670 for $387 shipped, so i really can't complain.

there is probably zero chance of the gtx660 being 325-350 MSRP.

AMD has cut prices for 7950/7870. I think they know better what the performance of the 660Ti will be and what's the price.

Nah, they've been letting nVidia one up them and then reacting a month or two later. Although maybe Rory is getting tired of that routine?

Steam numbers are only valid one way. You should know that ;)

Isn't that the truth -- good Lord, when DirectX 11 and the 5XXX series was out -- it was basically offered ad nauseam. Steam has a place to me for forums and may offer some insight but certainly doesn't replace Jon Peddie or Mercury Research.

Only by some ppl. Steam has and always been an indicator. It's not to be used as solid facts regarding sales numbers as its a small sample size to the total population who uses GPU etc.

As to the 660, i dont think its going to be as close as 670 to 680. As not only shaders are cut but importantly bandwitdh and rops. It's most likely going to be like the rubbish 5830... but i guess if they price it low, it will still be a fine product. In the end, only perf/$ and (to some incl me) perf/w that matters.

I don't think the HD 5830 was rubbish -- offered performance between a HD 5770 and HD 5850, where there was a performance and MSRP hole.

Indeed! However, there was a hole in performance and MSRP which the sku filled. Don't feel the product was rubbish.

If the GTX 660TI can offer more performance than a GTX 580 and close to a HD 7950 -- for 299, would be very welcomed. More potential examples of stronger performance/value for 28nm; as 28nm matures and competition/choice heats up.

How much of a price difference would there be between the 1.5gb and 3gb models? And would the 3gb model come out later or would they come out at the same time. Both 670 models were released at bthe same date so I'm guessing it would be the same for the 660ti.

the gtx 670 & 680 don't even have 3gb, so doubt the 660 will get one. there's only 1 680 with 4gb (an Evga model i beleive), but its got a reference cooler (super bad) and costs alot more!

if the gtx660 ti is 192 bit then there is no doubt that there will be some 3gb models from at least EVGA.

What's the point of waiting for their $200 dollar part? It'll be gimped and we're already close to seven months since the release of the 7970 which means new parts will be here soon.

660 will offer performance we've had available for years but cost more, seems like a waste.

Well, if I needed a new card and had ~$200 to spend on one, I'd want the most current. Unless the close out stock was just too compelling.

Remember, lots of computers don't have a PSU capable of driving a 570 or 6950. For example a prebuild that might have an iGPU. others, as well. It's just the first example that came to mind. ;)

2 min look-up on Newegg and I see MSI TwinFrozr 880mhz 7950 with 3 free games for $310 after rebate and shipping.

- This card will probably overclock to 1.1ghz without a sweat (+37.5% more than stock 7950s) = GTX680 performance
- It has 3GB of VRAM vs. rumoured 1.5GB for 660Ti
- It has a very good quiet cooler vs. what is likely to be a budget dinky cooler for the 660 series (just look at reference 670...)
- GTX660Ti is rumoured to launch by Mid-August. That's 1 month away. If you are willing to wait and not play any games for a month, might as well get a 7950 and make $50-60 bitcoin mining.

All in all, with HD7950 at $300-310, GTX660Ti is dead in the water for US buyers. I doubt it'll be able to overclock 40%. That leaves GTX660 / 660Ti as going against HD7850/7870, priced at $219 and $269 (or something like that). But knowing NV and a lot of its buyers and previous pricing for GTX450/550Ti, etc. I can see them slapping $299 on the 660Ti and still selling millions just because of the perception that GTX600 series is faster this round. Although, I read somewhere (KitGuru?) that a 660Ti can't even beat an overclocked GTX570, which is why NV needed to clear stock of 120k GTX570 units before launching it. If true, from a performance point of view if it is only as fast as a GTX570, it would need to be priced at $229 to make any sense.

* Obviously I am just guessing since no official specs have been released, but we do know that 7950 is a mad overclocker and is going for ~ $310, which is very good value. Even if GTX660Ti matches a stock 7950 and costs $299, I just can't believe that it will overclock 35-40%. At $300 level, HD7950 is such a fast card, I see no reason at all to even wait for the 660 series.

If those specs and price are true, I see no reason at all to wait for it. $310 is HD7950 performance today. 1.5GB of VRAM for a $300 card in August 2012 is disappointing to put it mildly. That's almost like 8800GTS 320 (GTX660Ti 1.5GB) vs. 8800GTS 640 (7950 3GB). The next round of games (Watch Dogs, GTAV, Metro Last Light, Crysis 3, Medal of Honor Warfighter, BF3 expansions) could easily use up 1.5GB of VRAM with MSAA.

Indeed its a crazy good OC card.

I just pushed it to 1.125ghz and its stable at 1.087 vcore, which is pretty insane. Vram running at 1.5ghz and i havent bothered to test it further.

Testing some benchmarks at these speeds its about as fast as a "stock" gtx680 turbo @ 1.2ghz.

I highly recommend the Powercolor PCS+ 7950, its the best "default/no mods" cooler I've owned. Fan at 55% is silent, keeps OC temps ~75C.

Thing is... if in october (2 and a half months from now) a 8xxx series card is out,
that doesnt really leave the 660 a long time to sell against the 7850/7870.

I think its best if nvidia Aim's high with these cards, if they want them to be able to also compete against what comes after the 8xxx series.

And between those 2½ months we gonna see a still unreleased HD7970GE and a sofar fictive HD7990?

I dont think HD8xxx is coming anytime soon.
