If the GTX 660TI can offer more performance than a GTX 580 and close to a HD 7950 -- for 299, would be very welcomed. More potential examples of stronger performance/value for 28nm; as 28nm matures and competition/choice heats up.
2 min look-up on Newegg and I see
MSI TwinFrozr 880mhz 7950 with 3 free games for $310 after rebate and shipping.
- This card will probably overclock to 1.1ghz without a sweat (+37.5% more than stock 7950s) = GTX680 performance
- It has 3GB of VRAM vs. rumoured 1.5GB for 660Ti
- It has a very good quiet cooler vs. what is likely to be a budget dinky cooler for the 660 series (just look at reference 670...)
- GTX660Ti is rumoured to launch by Mid-August. That's 1 month away. If you are willing to wait and not play any games for a month, might as well get a 7950 and make $50-60 bitcoin mining.
All in all, with HD7950 at $300-310, GTX660Ti is dead in the water for US buyers. I doubt it'll be able to overclock 40%. That leaves GTX660 / 660Ti as going against HD7850/7870, priced at $219 and $269 (or something like that). But knowing NV and a lot of its buyers and previous pricing for GTX450/550Ti, etc. I can see them slapping $299 on the 660Ti and still selling millions just because of the perception that GTX600 series is faster this round. Although, I read somewhere (KitGuru?) that a 660Ti can't even beat an overclocked GTX570, which is why NV needed to clear stock of 120k GTX570 units before launching it. If true, from a performance point of view if it is only as fast as a GTX570, it would need to be priced at $229 to make any sense.
* Obviously I am just guessing since no official specs have been released, but we do know that 7950 is a mad overclocker and is going for ~ $310, which is very good value. Even if GTX660Ti matches a stock 7950 and costs $299, I just can't believe that it will overclock 35-40%. At $300 level, HD7950 is such a fast card, I see no reason at all to even wait for the 660 series.
