Big things are goin down at The City...wedneday stores are closed not opening till 3, a huge corporate-wide communication goin out at 1:45, individual meetings with sales people all morning beforehand...nothing is known here, lower-level managers don't even know whats up, only Store Directors and Assistant Store Directors know...here's the speculation
-Circuit City reclaimed #1 in electronics, in income, but got obliterated in profits by Best Buy
-ALL COMMISSIONED ASSOCIATES will be moved to hourly
-more capable sales counselors will make a higher wage
-non-disclosure agreements must be signed, not to tell other associates your wage

This makes sense, there has been a hiring freeze since November, they have only been allowed to hire hourly associates, not commissioned. i feel, personally, that this will be bad for the company. Sure, there are massive paycuts, which means more $ for corporate, but, the competant sales people will leave for a better paying job, and those that stay will be far less motivated. Circuit City was generally known for having better customer service than Best Buy and the like, because they were commissioned and thus cared more about the cusotmer, if the customer is unhappy and makes a return, associate takes the commission hit. Now, that service will fall, and Circuit won't have that advantage anymore. This is all still speculation at this point, I guess we will find out soon..

-non-disclosure agreements must be signed, not to tell other associates your wage

Be sure it's more than a NDA Deeko, that sounds like the NDA has more to do w/ corp. info than wages

well, like I said, we have no idea whats going on....basically they don't want other SC's to know wages because everyone uesd to make the same thing(nothing), so if one guy is now making $5/hour more than another, solely by manager discretion, it could get ugly...

If you call 'better customer service' being attacked by 5 sales people within 1 minute of walking in the door, I guess so. I call it annoying as hell.

Ya right. Just because you sign a paper does not mean no one will talk any more. Everyone at my store knew what everyone else made, including a few of the managers. Big deal.

As long as they don't shut down their car stereo install shops, I'll be happy. I'll never take my car to BestBuy. On the whole, I really prefer shopping at Circuit City, but BestBuy has better deals on some things.

Seriously, worst buy couldn't install pencil lead into a mechanical pencil.

I had BB do a hu install once and after seeing how sloppy their work was, I told them to take all the sh*t out and give me my money back. I wanted to save myself the effort, but I ended up doing it myself anyways.

I've never had BB do an install for me. I've had CC install 4 stereos, a set of speakers, a car alarm/keyless entry, and a subwoofer (including running all of the wires). I've only been unhappy with their work on one of the stereo installs. The only reason that it didn't turn out perfect is that they put the installation bracket on upside down. I had rolled in at 8 on a Friday night to get the stereo put in after the previous one was stolen. They were hesitant, but did the work for me since I had dumped almost $1500 into my car with them over the course of 6 months. Unfortunately the guy just made a simple mistake. The roadshop was closing, and I could have brought it back the next day, but I figured out how to pull apart my dash and flip the bracket myself.

Anyway, long story short, I've been very happy with all the work they've done, except the last job. However, over the course of 6 months, I've come to the point where I can practically do all the work myself.

I like shopping for big ticket items, or items for my car, at B&M stores. I'm a huge fan of shopping on-line, but if something happens to my stereo or my speakers, I don't want to have to pull apart my car and do an RMA. I want to take it to the shop and have them deal with it for me.

Hey, does Circuit city still pricematch wholesale clubs like Costco ?

If so, how much hassle will they give me for getting over $400 off a $1500 item ?

this is big.
Deeko is right, circuit city will lose the only advantage they have against Best Buy, Ultimate electronic if they do this. They cant afford to be like Target vs Walmart or worse Kmart!
How much do you they will pay the Sales counselor, $12/hr? $18/hr? $10/hr? the latter sounds more reasonable to their income statement.

What is the salary range on a full-time CC employee anyway ? Salesmen on the floor I mean. Just curious.

It was quite a bit less when I was their for a couple months after college. (I was trying to decide whether to go to Grad school or find a real job). I was making something like $6/hr. I got my discount, probably spent more than I made the entire time I worked there, and quit to take a bank job that paid $3/hr more. If I remember right some guys who had worked for BB for a few years were in the $8-9/hr range.

There was no decent money in that system unless you were a manager and they had to work crazy hours. We were understaffed and got yelled at about overtime constantly. Funny thing was I got a check last year for $40 for a labor settlement after BB got sued again over making people work off the clock. Not that I ever worked off the clock but I think they keep getting nailed for the same thing every 5 years.....
