Any links on this "rumor"?

I couldn't imagine that they'd really stop.

The DS is a huge hit, they'd have no reason to stop.
 
They'd have been eating waaaay too many magic mushrooms to think of doing something like that 😀

Not only is the DS not the last handheld Nintendo will release, it is not even the last handheld that Nintendo HAS released. Gameboy Micro.

Sweet criminy... They would have to release another handheld before that could happen. The DS is already a success. When sales of the DS drop it will be because of its age.
