Ruined processor????

Right now I'm typing this on a different computer 'cause my computer is BROKE! :) I have an ECS K7S5A with a 1.4 TBird and the temps were getting a little high so I decided to reapply my Artic Silver on the WBK38 heatsink I have. The heatsink is incredibly hard to get on and off and my screwdriver slipped a couple times, but didn't "appear" to damage the board.

So I put everything back together, popped the psu plug in and pressed the power button and.... nothing. I've taken my heatsink off a few times and it has always been fine, but now something went wrong and I don't know if my mobo went bad or if my processor got damaged while working on it.

Could you tell me if there is an easy way to tell whether it's the mobo, processor, or both that are bad? I'm hoping for the mobo since it's about half the price of the cpu. When I press the power button the lights go on and the hard drive spins up, but I get no motherboard beep and also there is nothing going to the monitor. Nobody I know has a Socket A mobo so I can't try out my stuff with anyone else so I need to decide which part to buy first.

I'd appreciate ANY help or tips you can give.

Thanks a ton.

To see if the mobo is alright...try another processor on it. U said tht u have slipped tht screwdriver "a few times"...some ppl damage their mobo w/ just 1 time. U can also try the CPU in another mobo to c if the CPU is alright.

Alternatively, take out the CPU & look for any physical damage like burned marks (back & front), chipped core & so forth. For the mobo, use a magnifying glass & look for any scratch on it.

In the message I said I have no access to another mobo or processor to test out my parts, so I'm stuck trying to figure it out by myself. The processor didn't "appear" chipped to me, but I'll take a closer look with a magnifying glass later.

Also, could I RMA the mobo? And if so, who would I contact? NewEgg or ECS?

Thanks again.

you would contact NewEgg for the RMA. word of advice: get a different heatsink. the clips on those really suck. you can get a bare mcx-370 heatsink for $24 here. just use your existing fan. not only will the cooling be a lot better, but it is pretty impossible to damage anything when installing the heatsink. instead of a regular 1 piece clip, each side has a springloaded clip that takes no effor to go over the socket tabs. to tighten, you simply give a screw on each side a couple of turns with a driver. there is a spring on each side that prevents you from overtightening. great heatsink. i'm using the MCX-370's predecessor (the MC-370) and i love it.

Try to reset the bios using the reset jumper. Unplug the power cable to the mb first.

I would get different HS before you try anything else just so you dont damage the Tbird if its still good. I have tried 4 different types of h/s fan and by far the one that is easy to get off and on has been the Taisol.

Yes if you feel okay about commiting fraud. It was your fault. Obviously. You stabbed it with a screwdriver.

If you sold me a mobo with 7 day guarantee and I break it by stabbing with screw driver, do you think you its fair for me to ask for refund because its 'broken'?
