Will you most likely be playing with the forwards or the backs?

For warm ups we usually do 10-meter runs doing things like "high knees" runs, "butt kicks" (i.e. kick your heel against your butt as you run), lunge walks, side shuffle, "step over the hurdle" walks, karaoke runs... a lot of these are kinda hard to describe and are easier demonstrated.

I just came out with our local men's club this spring after not having played in about a year. I'm still playing on the 2nd side, but we played yesterday and won both our 1st and 2nd side games.

Cerpin text describes some pretty common dynamic warm ups. They're used in all kinds of sports and are really helpful. Google "dynamic warm ups" or "dynamic stretches" and you'll find more things to use.

Dynamic stretches are better. Do the static stuff AFTER training.

Rugby is a lot of fun!

Don't be a pussy and ride at ridiculous side angle. Run through people and put a fake, it fools most people and gives you a split second advantage to break the line.

Tackle hard and fast. Go in with the shoulder. The new skool method is to tackle up in to body/ hands whent hey are carring to try and dislodge the ball. Before it was to tackle the waist and then to slide down the leg and grab around the legs. This takes the player down but not the ball. You want posession of the ball.

Don't forget the stiff arm!

At our training sessions we work on a tackling technique that we call the "jackal," where you lay your shoulder in the runner to stop him, and wrap the body enough to push him down to the ground while you remain on your feet. That way you can poach the ball from him before his supporters form a ruck.

Have you learned of the new experimental law variations this year? I like most of them, but I'm not very keen on the new freedom to pull down a maul. I think it's dangerous.
