I took the fall half-season off due to some rotator cuff problems and time constraints with work, but I'm coming out for practice again after more than 6 months off.

I'm really excited but I'm slightly concerned about overdoing it too soon after being off so long -- especially the way the coach like to run us during training.

Any tips for avoiding fresh injuries after having been off for so long?

Ease into your training. If you've been seriously off for six months, you need to reintroduce your body to the sport's stresses over time. Your muscle, connective tissue adaptations, cellular adaptation, etc have become less effective or non-existent. You can't jump into the sport at the intensity you would work out at before. Be safe, avoid injuries, take it slow.

I did my best to pace myself accordingly today, but it was difficult. My mind remembers how I used to perform and seemed to expect my body to perform the same again. Luckily we didn't do anything with heavy contact, but I am concerned about my calves and Achilles tendons. I haven't worn my rugby boots in just as long, and and we did a lot of sprinting. It's hard not to overdo it when you're around a bunch of guys that are in match condition, too.

I may skip Thursday's practice to do some lower-intensity training on my own. Hell, come Thursday I may still be recovering from Tuesday lol.
