dreamhost just announced support for ruby on rails btw, for those with dreamhost. ugh too cool.

no it's server side scripting

there was a thread on this in software with some demo videos, looked kind of nifty

yea check it out...

i look at it as a way to easily/quickly make web applications... it does a lot of the mundane details for you, like all the database crap you would have to do by hand (connect to db, sql statements, forms, etc)
 
yeah, I looked into to it a bit a while ago...very interesting. hopefully I'll have the time and motivation to look into RoR and AJAX more.
