Damn!

I thought I was flying with my fastest time of somewhere around 51 or 52 secs.

Well, she's faster than me. It takes me like 2 minutes but I haven't really been working on speed.

There's a guy who comes into the pizza shop I work at... He's incredible with a Rubik's Cube... but a little whacko. He can take a scrambled Rubik's Cube, look it over for about 30 seconds, then solve it either blindfolded (or, lacking a blindfold in a pizza shop, he solves it behind his back),

And, when he solves it, it takes him wayyyy under a minute... more on the order of about 10 seconds.

When I suggested to him to compete in the Rubik's competition (there was one just a few months ago), he said that he couldn't use God's gift to compete... he suddenly became good at the cube after getting struck by lightening (or some other near death experience) - basically, when he talks about it, you get the impression that he's a nutcase with one skill.

edit: I still have the book since from when I was a kid... shows you all the algorithms for solving the Rubik's cube.. used to be able to do it regularly within 20 seconds... but not with my eyes closed.

God damn, it would be amazing to move my hands that fast. Imagine using that skill with the girls :p.

I used to amaze my friends on how fast I can solve the cube but these guys are on another planet.
There is a link for the 2003 world championship somewhere on that page.

My nephew can do one in under 1 minute. His little brother can do one in about two minutes. The cubes seem to have become popular out in the LA area lately.

How long did it take you guys to start being able to solve in under a minute?
How long did it take for you to figure out how to solve it at all?
Where did you start learning how?
Could say, 3 hours of work on it (using a guide of some sort) and maybe 2 hours of practice a week make someone a good/ok rubik's cuber?

I have had a few in my room that I occassioanlly rotate around, and I have NEVER solved one. any tips?

I recommend finding someone that knows how to do it and have them help you for the first little bit. You need to do it a lot to get everything memorized. Also, you want to invest in a pretty good cube. The not so nice ones are awful. Mine was really cheap and I constantly get stuck but my roommate's glides very nicely even if you don't line the sides up perfectly. Other than that, just practice.

a) I played with it back in the 80's...took me longer cause I had to learn by myself. I'd say 6 months.
b) I learned it by myself by going backward...from a solved cube....I took steps on going backward.
c) Learned it myself

All it is is a bunch of patterns.

I thought my method was decent but some of these new methods are just way better.

My Method consists of:

** There are a series of patterns that you use that only affects certain part of the cube and all the other parts remain intact.
With that said.

A) Solve 1 color first.
b) Then solve the first top layer linked to the color you just solved.
c) Then solve the middle layer.
d) Then get the 4 corner in the right place(the corners might not face the right way but just right position)
e) The get the 4 corners facing the right way.
f) get the 4 middle pieces in the last layer and you have a SOLVED CUBE.
