I want to host one, but don't know the first thing. Here are some question. Please feel free to add any comments.

1. Can a server be hosted by a third party ( olm.net, etc.)?

2. Is server is local (home DSL, Cable) do I need two machines to run as Server and to play on?

3. Do I need a Static IP Address?

4. What hardware would I need as the server (CPU, MEM, Video, etc.)

Thanks all!

1: The server can only be hosted by a third party if you have a computer co-located there. That's expensive ($200+/month).

2: If the server is local, then yes, you need two machines if you want to play on the server. If you don't go dedicated server, then you can play on the machine the game is running on.

3: You don't need a static IP, there are many Dynamic IP hosting places that can help if you have a dynamic one. I believe as long as your server gets picked up by the master server, a dynamic IP is fine. Never ran a game server on a dynamic IP, so I can't speak from experience

4: More horsepower = more players on the server. Video is not an issue, because the game won't be displaying the graphics, just crunching the numbers behind serving. I'd go with at least a p2 450 and 128mb ram. I ran a halflife server on a p200 with 56mb of ram for some time, could get 8 people playing on it without much slowdown.

Is there a way to remotely install an RTCW server client? We have a colocated server on a DS3 and really want to get an RTCW server up and the box we have there doesnt have a cdrom and it runs about 5 other major popular games so shutting it down would not be an option. Can anybody recomend a way to set one up?

MrBond,
So it is possible to run a non-dedicated server? Also, what about running this over cable (1.5/128k)?

I can't remember the name of the server but there's a guy out there running a dedicated server on a dual Athlon PC with a gig of RAM. He had it set to 48 players and it was the fastest thing I've ever seen. My ping was around 35 or so.
