RS-232 between DCE and DTE

I need to create a simple communication package that can communicate between a Data Terminal Equipment (DTE, ex. PC) and a Data Communication Equipment (DCE, ex. modem) using a serial communication RS-232 cable.

I am looking for a generic flow chart between DCE and DTE. Can anyone help?

I think that the package you're referring to already exists - it's call ed Hyper-Terminal and is a part of Widnows9X.

heh can you give me more info? yea I know it's already been answered, it's just I don't quite understand hyperterminal yet. in other words, how it communicates, compared to, say telnetting.

I want to know, becuase I'm taking Cisco Networking (done the first 2 semesters) and for the routers we configure, they are connected to the computer via a console port, which connects to a serial port on the computer, which you then use hyperterminal to go through there to get to the command prompt of the Cisco router.

Now, I don't think this has anything to do with the DCE-DTE, so this is why I'm trying to find more about this..
