RPM on Intel Retail Fan?

Punchy

I assembled a new system a couple of days ago with a retail P4 2.4b, and I don't think my fan is spinning as fast as it should be. At idle and under heavy loads it spins at 2265 - 2280 RPM. My temp is about 38c at idle, but quickly goes up to 65c in Prime95 and locks up. When my system has been powered off for a while, the fan whines for a few seconds upon startup. I ensured that it is installed correctly. Any thoughts?

Asus P4PE
P4 2.4b C1 @ 3.06, 1.625v.
Raedon 8500le
Kingston 2700 512M

Sounds like a defective fan...? Back in my P4 OC`ing days the retail fan spun at 5400rpm I think...? It was not near that low...? (2265 - 2280) Also it should not be making any noise cold or otherwise... 😉

A retail P4 fan should spin ~ 2400 - 2700 RPM with normal case temps. If the case temp gets high enough, it will increase. It can top out @ 4000 RPM. Those temps are high, especially the load temp. Something is not right.

IMO a retail hsf is not capable of handling that 2.4b@3.06ghz with 1.625v.....My hsf is way better then any retail hsf and I couldn't imagine it could hold close to it and thusa my temps would likely look similar....

Get a different hsf since you obvious plan on ocing this chip...retal hsf is not made for this....fan is too small and does not push enough cfm as shown by the large idle to load swing....at 65c you could start to see throttling and while it is usually reported as lethargic it may appear to some as a freeze...

Yea i have the same CPU with the retail fan @ stock. My temps are around 39C-41C underload

At 1st i thought the HSF wasn't seated right but then i saw u had it at 3.06Ghz!!!:Q

Oh. I missed the part that he was overclocking that far. Yes, 3.06 @ 1.625 is a lot for a retail HS/F. Get a bigger one.

Come on people. First the retail fan should spin around 2500rpm max. It is supposed to be very quiet and it is meant to cool a CPU at its stock speed. Intel does not guarantee that the retail sink will work for a 600MHz OC. If you want to OC it that much, get a better heatsink like the Swiftech MCX4000.

Strange.. I noticed the low fan speeds on retail boxed Celerons.. (that's about the speed they run, no joke) but it sounds too slow for your CPU... honestly from what I have seen, it looks like you ended up with a Celeron HSF.. (they look the same) the fan speed differenes are quite big between the 2....

Doesn't really matter in this case....

1)the fact is you are running higher then default vcore and since no board reports .005 variations in voltages I have seen makes me think you are just listing what you set in the bios and need to get a handle on what is actually being delivered...

2)you are 606mhz above rated speed....

I think I have heard the hsf are bigger on the 3.06's as well...Until intel actually bundles these things with copper cores and paste to apply instead of that gummy crap I wouldn't recommend it for heavy duty ocing...

the HSF (with copper) that comes with a retail 3.06 performs pretty good (3500rpm) but is more noisy (as loud as high output panaflo 80 mm) than what is used in 2.8 or <..

so hey use copper at 3.06ghz....The 2.4b hsf looks like the same crappy aluminum POS they sent with my 1.6a.....with that same gummy crap that is waiting to try to adhere itself to a cpu for life...

I appreciate all the input. I guess I should've mentioned that the cpu was overclocked in the body of my message 🙂 I really had no plans to OC until I browsed this forum and saw the success this chip was having.

Anyway, I went to a computer show today to get a better HS/fan. The best thing I could find was the TT Volcano 7+. I've got it in there now running on medium speed (4500rpm), and I'm having identical results in regard to heat. The only difference in the machine is that now it sounds like a bus driving through my study.

I think I'm going to put the Intel HS/fan back on, and just throttle the cpu back a little for now. 🙁 I was getting 2.88 @ default voltage.

I've used two retail boxed 3.06 CPUs. They came with a heatsink with a thick copper base and many thin aluminum fins. Fins actually seemed quite fragile, and appeared to be pressed into the copper base. Each CPU came with a syringe of some gray gummy compound. Wasn't thin like heatsink compounds I normally come across, but thick and gummy. Each syringe has just more than enough for one application - two if you apply really thin like you're supposed to with AS.

Yikes TT (thermaltakes) are complete crap!!! I tried one with my 1.6a@2.4 and it was as bad as retail HSF...so sounds like you see same thing....Th fan is too small and those to push decent air it spins too high of an rpm...thus loud!!!!

Go get an alpha 8942 and 80mm panaflo M1a or ystech adjustable fan...they push the cfm you need plus the alpha hs has the largest embeded copper core I have seen...That TT's copper core if I remember doesn't completely or barely covers the IHS of the p4...

I wish I'd known that TTs are crap before I plunked down $30. Can I get that Alpha setup at a retail chain, or do you think I need to get it online? And yes, for some reason there is a step on the underside of the Volcano which causes it to barely cover the processor (probably 1/32 to spare).

list of choices:
alpha pal8942
swiftech mcx478
swiftech mcx4000
and apparently slk900 fits p4's?

maybe call some places up instead of going there to save a trip
