RPM Monitoring

Just ordered a 92mm Panaflo case fan/3 pin for my SP76 CPU heatsink. Will I be able to monitor the rpms. I wanted to run it from the power supply as apposed to the mobo. Actually I meant to order the 4 pin. If I can what would I need? Something like a 3 to 4 pin with rpm connector? My other cp has a volcano 9 running off the PSU but it came with everything I needed to monitor it thru MBM. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Ted

sometimes I think you can get a 3pin to four pin converter that has a branch off of speed monitoring wire that is also a 3 pin that you can stick on your motherboard.. I think I might have seen it at circuit city, some antec wire addons.

Only 3 pin fans support rpm monitoring, so it's lucky you did get those. But to run it off a molex connector (4 pin), you'll need something like what nboy22 described if you want to monitor fan speeds as well. Personally I don't see much need to run fans off a psu as opposed to the motherboard (I seriously doubt motherboard manufacturers are stupid enough let a fan burnout the entire motherboard), but I guess that's just me. I know Antec (and other) psus have dedicated speed controlled fan molex connectors, but a lot of motherboards have fan speed control through the bios too. Ah well, I'm moving a little off topic...

ALso, it may still not work, as there are Panaflos with the 3rd wire for alarm, as well.

The Panaflo HB1 (but not the BX) says: "Locked Rotor Alarm Senser, 2PPR" does that mean it will monitor or it won't? Input is 2.7 watts. Is that to much to run off the mobo? That doesn't seem like a lot of draw. I'm asking all this ahead of it's arrival only because I don't have the 3 to 4 w/rpm connecter and I have to get one shipped as I live in rural northern Michigan where I can't walk in & buy this junk. Appreciate the help so far guys!

Hmm.... good qustion about the monitoring..

As far as current draw 2.7 watts is nothing you'll be fine.

The Locked Rotor Alarm Signal and the 2PPR (2 Pulse Per Revolution) Signal are two different features on Panaflo fans. With the locked rotor, the signal goes from low to high when it senses a locked rotor -- there's no RPM sensing, just signal when the fan can't turn. The 2 PPR signal is RPM sensing.

They are different features with different suffixes. The Locked Rotor part number has the 1BS suffix. The RPM sensing 2PPR part has the 1BX suffix. I'm fairly certain you can't get both on the same fan. My guess is that since the part you ordered had no suffix and a confusing description, it has neither a locked rotor signal nor a RPM signal. It was probably just a lazy product description that grabbed more than it should have.

Slight correction= H1B not HB1 which I don't think exists. Model #FBA09A12H Optional 3rd Lead Wire Signal (Locked Roror Alarm Senser, 2PPR) It came with 3 wires (2 red/1 black) Strange to me but I don't have much experience in the fan dept. Anyway I'll know in a day or 2 as I hope to sneak a little time in to put this new build together. Thanks much for the feedback

If your fan has a yellow wire for the tachometer, then you can either plug it into a motherboard connector that monitors RPM or get a fan speed monitor.

Well, that's the thing. The fan has 2 reds and 1 black with a tail that will plug onto the board. This has got to be a dumb question but should I try it. I'm nervous cuz this is the new board. (I just lost one out of the blue) I'm probably belaboring this but I figured someone here has experienced a fan with 2 reds & 1 black wire. I'm putting it together today. I'm using it for the CPU. Number of wires mean nothing when it comes to Panaflos. You can remove the tail at the fan hub and replace it with one with any number of wires. This means you can have a "3-wired" fan with no RPM monitoring or even make a "2-wired" fan that has RPM monitoring (but with no way of seeing it).
