As an avid RPG player and WoW addict, i found Dragon Age:O very disappointing, regardless of all the rave reviews. I played it some hours but sadly never "got into it".

The biggest gripe i had with the fight system and those stupid "multiple choice" questions/answers which seemed very out of place to me. The graphics (for a single player game!!) were also rather underwhelming and often simply on WoW level.

There is also a big limititation in how you can move around with your character. I remember standing on a hill and wanting to go down that hill, but simply couldnt since the game-engine didnt allow me to go down that small hill but "forced me" to take the path around it.

All in all disappointed and i am not sure whether i will continue this game.

--> Right now wife is playing Oblivion (again) on the big screen (on a very old PC!!) and i am totally amazed how good it looks and how well it runs on that old PC. (Single core AMD 64 and some el-cheapo Radeon 4350 which cost barely $50 shipped)

I never noticed this before, maybe the Xbox 360 version just didnt look that great so i didnt pay attention when she played it on the 360.

Oblivion is one of the few (if not the only one) RPGs were simply everything feels "right" in terms of RPG "flair", graphics, etc..etc.. IMHO

So, basically you want shooters / action games with stats, levels and missions? I can see why Bioware RPGs might not appeal to you. Bioware has always emphasized plot, dialog and character development (the roleplaying).

I would recommend that you give Titan Quest, Diablo II and possibly Icewind Dale a try based on your tastes. If you want some more story, might I suggest Deux Ex 1 and Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines.

I couldn't stand the level up system in Morrowind or Oblivion. I just didn't feel compelled to level up.

I liked Titan Quest a lot, it's a very good hack n' slash style game. Maybe Neverwinter Nights might be a good inbetween style game for you? Torchlight is a fun, cheap, and fast paced hack n' slash.

You said you enjoy WoW, I've been playing Age of Conan for a while now. I'm not hugh into MMORPG's, but I play it for a few hours each week. You might also like something like that.

No. NWN is still a traditional RPG game. I would tell the OP to avoid anything from Bioware except the newer Mass Effect titles. What the OP likes aren't real RPGs, but rather action games with levelling i.e. "action rpgs".

Maybe Fallout. Mass Effect (esp 2).

and seconded on Deus Ex. One of the best games ever.

I also love RPG's but it's been a while since I played a traditional one that I really liked.

NWN, Baldur's Gate and Dragon's Age are all basically the same game. I couldn't get into the story in Dragon's Age myself but I thought the combat system was at least much better than the crap forced D20 adaptation in NWN, Baldur's Gate and Kotor. D20 is a crutch for humans, it really has no place in a computer game because it's not a good combat system on its own.

It's kinda sad though, RPGs are dominated by 3 games: Fantasy d20 (NWN, BG), JRPG (FF), and randomly generated first person RPG (anything Bethesda). Fortunately Fantasy d20 is moving away from d20 and Bethesda's stuff is getting more polished. JRPG's are mostly terrible though ;)

All those games are varying degrees of lame (except Dragon Age, I haven't played it yet.)

Note sure what to recommend to OP. Somehow OP is picky, yet he likes Oblivion, which I thought was pretty crappy. Play Morrowind instead. Maybe go look for some older "classic" RPGs like Fallout.

Doesn't matter. Anyone that says a game looks bad because of JAGGIES fails at computer gaming.

EDIT: And it seems like most of his posts complain about graphics. Visual whores are the bane of good gaming.

I used to hate jaggies and anything under than 60 FPS, but I have been playing a lot of console games and have gotten used to lower resolutions, jaggies, low framerates etc.

Being obsessive about this sort of thing is futile. Better to just accept it and enjoy the game.

Hmm, graphics whore and wants a "role playing game" without any actual role playing.

That means you can't play any of the classic infinity engine games, or Fallout 1-2, or SW: KoTOR 1-2, or Vampire: Bloodlines.

Even battle-heavy JRPGs usually have some "stupid "multiple choice" questions/answers" so they're off the list too.

I guess Fallout 3 is all that's left, and maybe clickfests like Titan Quest.

Maybe get a 360 and play Crackdown? It's a sandbox game with no dialog at all, but you do have stats that level up.

If you're a WoW addict then you know diddly squat about RPG's.
I suggest more MMO's. Maybe even a new genre like space. Try EVE.

I can understand where the OP is coming from. Bioware games are RPGs on rails. They're not for everyone.

I'm in the same boat. I like rpgs, but not the more linear ones. I miss games like the original Dragon Warrior on NES, that game was awesome. Except for the whole random enemies appearing out of thin air thing, I don't really like that either.

It comes down to what you want in an RPG.

What's the history of this genre?

One branch goes back to the military wargames that became D&D when tanks were made into fantasy monsters. This eventually led to the 'dungeon crawler' started by "Rogue", which evolved into MUDs and eventually to MMORPGs. Another branch goes back to fantasy literature, especially Tolkien but many myths. This literature was mixed in with the mechanics of all of the above.

Diablo was enormously controversial when it came out - 'it's not a real RPG! It's just an action game that has fantasy monsters!'

So what was a real RPG? You levelled up, you upgraded gear.

There have been many variations - some smaller selling ones have been closer to online books with a lot of story and text.

You can have 'twitch' action, turn-based combat, story-driven... online or solo...

I suggest all players try 'Rogue', just for the history and because it's still fun, to get a feeling of the basic components of the genre. It's more tense deciding whether to try that unindentified scroll or potion or tiptoeing in the dark when you might find a Yeti than most 'suspense' games made now.

I don't care as much for the twitch games, or the combat-dominated games.

I am playing DAO since getting it on sale from Steam. It is OK, but I prefer KOTOR 1 or Oblivion. Maybe I am just getting jaded about RPGs. DAO just seems kind of repetitive. I am playing a mage and must have cast each of the same spells a hundred times each. And the drops seem extremely repetitive also.

I also liked titan quest and immortal throne, but tried several times to get into Morrowind and always got lost/confused/bored after an hour or 2.

I can't relate to someone that thinks Bioshock is lame. I was enthralled by the art direction, the story and the morality choices. Easily a top 3 game for me in the past few years.

I suppose if you compare the core of Bioshock (a FPS) to every other FPS, then I'd concede that it's nothing earth-shattering. But the game is so much more than that, to me.

I couldn't get more than 2 hours of play into Dragon Age. It was that boring.
