I've been looking for a game that fits this bill but the only thing that seems to do it is Oblivion or Two Worlds...

I bought mount & blade and played it for a few hours but the combat is so terrible and the leveling system is a joke, so I uninstalled it and probably won't bring it back...ever.

I liked Oblivion except for 1) equal leveling which I fixed with a mod 2) the world is redundant in a sense that you just keep going to this gate, close it, that gate, close it, etc....I don't know, it felt repetitive.

I was looking at a game like Titan Quest or NWN2 but there are problems with this...first off, I like the FP view, slashing, defending, etc. That's why I liked Oblivion and Two Worlds...2nd, NWN2 is a DND game, and I've never played DND so I don't know any of the rules...is it easy to pick up on or will it require reading, research, etc.?

I don't mind dated graphics (within reason, 1995 is not going to cut it) if the gameplay mechanics are there...I keep looking through IGN's RPG reviews but they all seem either MMORPG (Which I've never tried and can't say i'm in a hurry to) or more of the Diablo/Titan Quest layout which I'm not really fond of.

Edit: Over the shoulder/3rd person is also acceptable

Any suggestions? Thanks,

John

Morrowind and Fallout 3 come to mind obviously. But FO3 is set in a futuristic setting, so it might not be your cup of tea.

I played and beat Fallout 3...not a bad way to waste a week, but yeah, shooting everything with VATS from 100yards really ruined the experience...I walked around with a bolt action rifle and 9mm machine pistol just to keep things fair because the plasma rifles were 1shot 1kill regardless of level because of my skill level...kind of ruined it.

I heard about Dark Messiah and that's one of the one's i'm considering...i heard it was a linear story-driven game though, right? I don't mind that so much except for when I've leveled a character for however long, i hate the game ending abruptly on me (Fallout anyone)

Three games come to mind:

Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
Deus Ex (original)
System Shock 2

VtMB is the newest of the three, and has both first and third person views available. Being quite buggy at release and with only minimal patching by the devs, the fan community has been releasing their own patches for this game. It was still quite fun despite the bugs.

Both DE (released 2000) and SS2 (1999) are dated, but don't let that stop you from playing two of the best games ever released.

i'm in the mood for something with a leveling system...I beat BIAHH, Crysis, GoW, I'm getting to the point where it's a drag to play a shooter because there's no motivation, I just go kill, go somewhere else, kill, etc. I actually spent a week straight on PES2009 just because you could level your player, not because I particularly liked it.

To me the third person view of the Gothic series was fine.

I think you can press a key to go first person but you can't stay in first person.

Mass Effect?

Played it, waiting for Mass Effect 2 to replay it (stupid 3 activation limit)

there is a deactivation tool, you know.

I didn't know that, i'll look that up

And Via, i don't mind over the shoulder 3rd person, it's the top down view like I'm looking at a chessboard that I don't really care for...is Gothic more like the former or the latter?

Wow only one Mention of Vampire bloodlines? The game was awesome and if the company had not gone under there would be many sequals for the world of darkness/white wolf settings

I really wish they would have made a werewolf the apacolypse game before they released the new world of darkness crap.

Fairly newer RPG out called Drakensang...its more of a 3rd person game though, but its definitely worth a play. I've been havin fun with it. Almost seems like a direct mix of NWN and Fable.

As was mentioned, Gothic is a behind the back 3d view. The world scrolls smoothly and seamlessly around you.

Most PCs nowadays will give you great view distance.I'm dabbling with a game of Gothic 2 right now that I come back to when I'm bored of other things and I have the view distance maxed out.

Combat is fun I think. It's actually something you have to get good at.

You attack with the mouse and block with the S key. You can perform different attacks and evasions with other keys. When you beat a tough opponent more powerful that you are in Gothic or Gothic 2 you've earned it.

Definitely check out the Gothic series, like already mentioned. They contain pretty much exactly what you are looking for i'd think, especially if you didn't like the leveling system in Oblivion. I actually preferred Two Worlds to Oblivion (call me crazy), but any Gothic game is miles above either.

You could download both 1 and 2 from gog.com, or you cold grab this: http://www.gogamer.com/Gothic-...Id444710VVviewprod.htm

Once you start playing G3, apply this patch first: http://forum.jowood.com/showthread.php?t=161922

G3 is probably the closed you're going to get to Oblivion in terms of graphics, but any of the games in the series are going to be better in terms of environment and especially the leveling system.

I also enjoyed Morrowind, so check that out too if you get a chance as it's also miles above Oblivion. And keep an eye open for these two games:

Definitely check out the Gothic series, like already mentioned.

With more and more gamers "maturing" and expressing disappointment over the lack of depth in games (RPGs especially) I think this is the perfect time for the Gothic series to find the audience it should have enjoyed years ago (on this side of the pond anyway).

I'm just gonna keep on recommending them to people. Gothic 1 was the best gaming experience I've ever had (it took me like 2-3 months to complete one summer), and I just picked it up on a whim. Sure glad I did; no American gaming sites (or thier posters) had anything good to say about Gothic back them.

When I tried to defend Gothic I was basically flamed into submission.

I started with G2. After I beat G2 and the addon I searched for G1 for a few months and eventually found a used copy on eBay. Now that they're popular you can easily get them which is much different than it was a few years ago.

Makes me happy though because now there is an audience for Gothic in NA like you mention. Risen and Aracadia will hopefully continue the overall concept without dumbing it down like Oblivion did to the Elder Scrolls series.
