Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
Deus Ex (original)
System Shock 2

VtMB is the newest of the three, and has both first and third person views available. Being quite buggy at release and with only minimal patching by the devs, the fan community has been releasing their own patches for this game. It was still quite fun despite the bugs.

Both DE (released 2000) and SS2 (1999) are dated, but don't let that stop you from playing two of the best games ever released.

These are good recommendations.

Also consider the Witcher http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg...cededition/review.html

Dark Messiah is the game you are looking for. You'll be hooked after going through the training level. Also, Vampire the Masquerade, Gothic, Witcher.

Not very much an RPG, but Stalker and Stalker Clear Sky are pretty good.

I second this. There are no experience points, levels, or skills, but it's still an RPG in that you have a (reasonably) open-ended world to explore with a main quest and lots of side quests.

Does anyone have any input on Runes of magic? I was just reading about it, and although I'm kind of turned off by the MMO experience in general (I'm just not hardcore enough to compete with some people and I'm not much of a team player...ask anyone at my college) but the reviews were not bad and the interface looks decent.

I will never play WoW out of principle, so please don't recommend that or any other pay to play MMO's, I'm not into them enough to make them worthwhile

Deus Ex and System Shock 2. Both of which are hard to find.
Deus Ex is on Steam.

Makes me nauseous, though, even with FOV cranked up. 🙁

Sorry no thoughts on Runes. I tend to stay away from MMO's. It's free to play though, so i'd say give it a shot if you're interested.

Do yourself a favor though and pick up the Gothic universe collection while it's still on sale at GoGamer: http://www.gogamer.com/Gothic-...Id444774VVviewprod.htm

Trust me, you'll thank me later.. 😉

Nice - and it's on sale right now [24 hour madness] - and of course out of frikken stock! 🙁

That sucks.. I'm pretty sure it was in stock when I posted that.

Maybe they'll get some more in after the 48 hr madness sale. It's worth it at double or triple that price IMO.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is another first person RPG.

It's a little more actiony than Oblivion, but good game there. YOu may also try The Witcher. And I haven't played it, but Gothic might fit the bill.

To answer one of your original questions, you don't need to know anything about DnD to play NWN1/2. I played through them without ever having played the tabletop game. All the dice throwing and calculations are done behind the scenes, and all you have to worry about is the standard RPG stuff like skills, items, and so forth. The game does a good job of explaining how skills and items work, too. That being said, don't play NWN2 first. NWN1 is a MUCH better game.

Oh, and give Morrowind a try. It's one of my all time favorite games, and I thought it was far superior to Oblivion.

So NWN1/2 functions like KOTOR, just automatically? Honestly I loved that interface, but I haven't seen that in any other games.

Everyone has mentioned Morrowind as well, I thought this was the same as Oblivion so I overlooked it, but I'll check the reviews and what have you.

I got Dark Messiah (being in italy has it's advantages, you can't get new releases, only games>1yr old) and it's pretty good...I just wish it has a little more variety with leveling and what have you...I picked up the fire arrow technique, increased mana to 70 and now i just go around throwing fireballs, I have 9 skill points saved but don't see any reason to use them...but overall a good game so far, and the valve engine is nice (I never played half-life)

Oh, anyone try Fable: the lost chapters? I saw that there and the reviews looked cool...your character actually shows damage/scars from fights, gets fat if he eats too much, etc.

Is the game worth 20euros ($30)? I figure I'll be done with Dark Messiah (because it's so linear) within a day or so...I'll pick up NWN1/2 after I find another game to play because I figure it might take a while...Gothic looked good but I can't find a copy here (though I could probably order it from the U.K.)

Fable: TLC was definitely a fun game (IMO). I'd feel more comfortable with it at a $20 price point, but that's more of a judgement call.

You have to look at it this way...in Europe, 20euros is 20dollars...it took me a while to accept that too 🙁

try paying 50euros for a game, playing it, hating it, then realizing said game cost $75 (Empire:Total War I'm talking to you)

I'll probably pick up Fable...is it a story driven game or is it more sandbox style? It's called the lost chapters so I was wondering if it's like a bunch of stages or if you continue progressing throughout the game non-stop...Anyone know?

you don't need the enhanced edition.
Just get the regular version (Much cheaper) and download the enhanced version from their site (Free)

you can do that? It is the exact same version? If so then I can order it now!! I'll check the site, and thanks!

I just checked the site and saw the download for 1.4 to enhanced edition...looks like you were right, and the regular copy is 5pounds cheaper at game.co.uk

thanks a lot

Yeah, and that's what I did. Bought one off ebay for $15 and downloaded the enhanced version plus the expansion map for FREE.

At first, you may not like the game, but give it about 1hr into the game and you'll be hooked.
Have fun and get ready for many sleepless nights.
