Why did baldur's gate 3 never happen? Man, BG1/2 are probably my favorite PC RPG's ever.

Throne of Bhaal was what was supposed to be 3. With Gaider's Ascension mod it's pretty great as an expansion anyway.

KOTOR
KOTOR2 with completion mod*
NWN1 mods (play the two expansions as the original campaign if you like, skip the original original campaign)
NWN2, first expansion, and mods

(*disclaimer: the story is nothing at all like original KOTOR, and the powers you get are laughably imbalanced)

As for the TLJ suggestion: it's not RPG, it's an adventure game, but fun. Would be nice if Dreamfall made it to GOG (the only place to buy these outdated games IMO).

Pretty much ToB ended the story line.
Also Black Isle disolved.
And the engine was starting to be dated.
And Atari wanted to go a new direction with a new engine (ala NWN).

Gothic 2 is bigger, more realized, more perfect. It also has a sizable expansion.

But, for me, it stands on the shoulders of Gothic.

This is one series that has to be played in order.

The only true RPG I ever liked was Morrowwind/oblivion. I like that you can actually do the fighting where as in most of these other you point and click and just watch animations. But if you do like that why not an online rpg like World of Warcraft.

DKS is a bit of fun (dragon knight saga) and relatively long. Hum. I tis not party based for sure; more first person but the story and game mechanics are stronger than oblivion. I guess near the end of flame of vengance expansion it thought it became a bit old but most of it was a blast. As a comparison I found oblivion a bit old after the first 4 or 5 hours and while I finished the game for the most part found it unimaginative.

I bought the 5-year Anniversary Edition for my 360 last week to have something to play while the hurricane trapped me in doors all weekend and I'm enjoying it so far (although I'm kind of annoyed that there's no way to turn off friendly fire... I kinda suck and I keep killing people accidentally if we're fighting together)

I tried playing Oblivion the other day and I don't seem to recall the map sucking donkey dick. I can't zoom out?! How am I supposed to fast travel places if I don't know where they are because I can't zoom the map out?

Thanks all - seems like I need to start gathering some info on these suggestions. I know and have played some of the old school titles - have been gaming since the late 80'es after all 🙂

How did you like them all? What order did you play them in? that must have taken a chunk of time.

Dragon Age: Origins: ~60 hours - best CRPG ever. The story was great, and the characters extremely well written. It really felt like you as the player was creating the story. This is Bioware at its best.

Dragon Age 2: ~40 hours. Sadly it was dumbed down to reach out to a broader audience. The result was an ok game, but did not deliver what I'd expect from an RPG. It felt very linear, the reuse of areas were ridiculous. Spawning ninjas do not belong in a fantasy RPG! Also the title was misleading - it was not a sequel to DA:O and only a few and mainly irelevant cameos were to be found. The game felt rushed and lowbudget - Bioware can do much better than this.

Mass Effect 1: ~30 hours. Another great title. Rather short though - would have wished for twice the game time. Although predefined, Sheppard was/is a great character to play, and it felt like the choices had massive impact on the story.

Mass Effect 2: ~40 hours. As great as ME1, but also a bit on the short side. Felt like it ended when the story was just beginning to take off.

The Witcher 1: ~50 hours. Story was a bit unfocused at times and it's easy to get lost. Not very self explanatory. Still a great game - very close to DA:O in greatness.

The Witcher 2: ~40 hours. A very worthy sequel to TW1. Bridging of the story between the two games were impressive - felt like dropping in right where I left off. Graphics are amazing. I liked the story, although I didn't enjoy so much chapter 2 and rushed it a bit I suppose. Revealing why I didn't like chapter 2 would include a major spoiler - so let's just say that the devs took a rather drastic and upsetting story decision -that's the beauty and curse of very raw storytelling that The Witcher series have, say compared to ME or DA.

GTA4: ~50 hours. Not as great as the best GTA ever (San Andreas) but a worthy game in the series. I'm considering if I should give "stories from Liberty cities" a go.

Hmm that is a lot of hours isn't it. Well it's what I can clock in in 6 months (+ 80 hours of borderlands) :biggrin:

I wouldn't mind a BG remake not because they can milk it...but because its so dated/aged. a well done remake would be cool for all of us who never played it. i read reviews of how awesome the first was when i was a kid, and the second when it came out, but i had no monies then lol

I take it you have a 360? If so :

Tales of Vesperia - what Final Fantasy should have been today, ungodly amount of things to do, go anywhere, deep combat. Put around 150 hours into it. IMO a must play if you are a serious RPG/Fantasy fan.

Star Ocean and Infinite Undiscovery are two other great 360 RPGs. There are a bunch more like Blue Dragon that are a bit cheesy, but not bad.

For the PC :

Morrowind/Oblivion
Gothic series - buggy, but I liked them
Witcher series
STALKER is a FPS, but could be considered a RPG. Loved it.
Baldurs Gate - old school D&D, but still fun to play.
Deus Ex series - original is ugly by today's standards, but still better than the new one imo.
Bioshock series - not a traditional RPG, but fun as hell.
Diablo series
and literally tons of older games, some of which may have 16 colors, but surprisingly are as fun as modern games - Darklands, Wizardry series (another must play imo), Bards Tale, Daggerfall (Oblivion's roots), etc.

A RPG is what you call a RPG. I can't stand dialog tree gameplay, or long winded cutscenes, but I do enjoy building my character, which is role playing. Honestly this hurt from other people calling games RPG is ridiculous - you do know dialog tree gameplay is not role playing... the AI you are talking to will always give the same answers to the same questions.

You should really consider trying to play the original. Granted the graphics are nothing in comparison to today, but the game play has held up remarkably. And some of the combats can be very tactical and challenging. And the story and choices are amongst the best even by today's standards (in fact they blow away most of what is out there now IMHO).

and to help things along, when playing BG1, get the Tutu Mod which allows you to play BG1 using the upgrades of the BG2 engine. Just do a search for bg-tutu.

And you can probably pick them up for $10 or maybe just a tiny bit more.

I figured out that I can look at my objective in the journal and click map, and it'll move the map to that area. That works well enough for me. Sadly after 8 replays I can't make it past the second floor of the first tower as a mage, so I quit. I remember it being a lot easier as a rogue.

I tried Gothic 3 just now and it seemed clunky and uninvolving, plus it didn't really explain how to do anything as far as leveling up, and I couldn't figure out how to open a map to find anything...

Gothic 2 is pretty old. You have to max out everything through your GPU control panel.

You can access everything in G3 through the char screen. The tabs are on the right.

There's even a map to track quests by city, which I like.

My map tab on the right is blank? Honestly even if it had a map the whole game just seems to clunky for me to play.

There's some solid suggestions in this thread. Allow me to sum them up!

Action RPG: Not true RPGs, but pretty fun nonetheless. Diablo 2/Titan quest/WoW/Mass effect 1

The classics: Knights of the old republic, Baldur's gate I/II, fallout and Morrowind.

Old but try The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. Well, TLJ is old, Dreamfall isn't really that old.

Absolutely awesome games! But I wouldn't really post them in a RPG thread. Yes, the stories are as rich as any RPG, but they belong in their own genre.
