RPG recommendations

Recently finished Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 1 + 2, The Witcher 1 + 2, GTA 4.

Now I've kind of run out of games .. suggestions?

I do have Fall Out New Vegas, that I could give another shot, but I couldn't get into it at all the first 2 times I've tried.

Old but try The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. Well, TLJ is old, Dreamfall isn't really that old.

Although they are more like point and click adventure games than RPGs.

I would second the recommendation of Knights of the Old Republic absolutely. And I third the nomination of NWN1-2. Also try looking into Temple of Elemental Evil (but do the Co8.org patch before playing).

I have also delved a little bit into Two Worlds (1-2). If you can get past the really poor voice acting, they are fairly fun to play. And you can probably get them cheap, which is a plus because they aren't "That" great.

As far as Fallout 3 (and by extension New Vegas), I personally loved them. And if you made it through DA2, these are MUCH better. But you really have to have a mind set for the setting. I played the original Fallout 1-2 back in the day and thought they were the most awesome things going. So I might be a bit biased. But Decent story, good progression. Lots of freedom to wander around and they didn't have the Oblivion Leveling issue to contend with. Plus, if you are like me and don't want to have advancement dependant on how quickly you can click the mouse, VATs system is just great.

> Neverwinter Nights 1/2
> Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic [ I - II ]

I agree with these, and add: Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

For a diablo 1 -esque mindless action RPG, Torchlight was fun.

The Penny Arcade guys made a free app that is kinda like Pandro is to music as it is for games.

Takes a little bit of time to input stuff, but it does make some good suggestions (atleast for my game types).

For RPG's, there's an embarrassment of riches.

Are you interested in 'old school'? If so, there's the Spiderweb games (e.g. Geneforge, or the new Avadon on Steam) or Eschalon.

Of course there are the famous Bioware series - Baldur's Gate, Planescape, Icewind Dale.

There's Risen - seems to be a good modern RPG.

'Divine Divinity' series, Arx Fatalis, the Gothic Series.

Not really an RPG, but rogue-like games are fun to some people.

It's a great game, and maybe the most hardcore RPG ever made, but Gothic is probably a little too old for modern gamers.

I've quit recommending it.

I'd go for Risen.

+1 for Baldur's Gate

If you are a fan of hack and slash...Diablo 1 and 2.

I am probably one of the few (or only) who couldn't get into KotOR; it was immersive and great, but I couldn't stand the combat. Mass Effect 1 felt like KotOR minus my gripes about combat.

The term RPG seems to be thrown around quite liberally these days. In a proper RPG you can assume a role and make gameworld affecting decisions based on your character's point of view. Different decisions should result in different outcomes.

Nowadays all you need is a skill tree (i.e. Diablo and clones) but that isn't really any different from a driving game where you can tune up your car based on your own preferences.

Diablo & Diablo II
Sacred
Titan Quest Immortal Throne
Borderlands - first person shooter / rpg
Fallout 3

Keep an eye on the steam sales and buy whatever goes on sale.

How did you like them all? What order did you play them in? that must have taken a chunk of time.

I just started Dragon Age: Origins. its awesome but time consuming. Before that I played the witcher 2 and LOVED it. Once i finish da😱 i may go back and play the first witcher since, from what i've heard, DA2 is pretty bad.

If you are going to go BG series and IWD 1-2, you have to also include Fallout 1-2 (very different games from Fallout 3) which were also really good games (but won't run on WinXP or higher). But yeah, all of them are amongst the top of the food chain as far as RPGs are concerned. and don't forget Arcanum.

Personally, I don't consider Diablo (and all of the clones including Titan Quest and Torchlight) to be RPG. They are a lot more action and the decisions which are supposed to be RPG in nature don't have any material impact (IMHO). don't get me wrong, they were fun games, but just not RPG enough for me to call them RPGs.

if you liked dragon age 1, then Dungon Seige 1 & 2 come to mind. Though Dungeon Seige 3 is more like Dragon Age 2 IIRC (have not played the last two as the style is too different to the first for me to get into).

22 replies and no Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?

I bought the 5-year Anniversary Edition for my 360 last week to have something to play while the hurricane trapped me in doors all weekend and I'm enjoying it so far (although I'm kind of annoyed that there's no way to turn off friendly fire... I kinda suck and I keep killing people accidentally if we're fighting together)

Why did baldur's gate 3 never happen? Man, BG1/2 are probably my favorite PC RPG's ever.

I wished there was a 3,really liked 1 and 2, but two reasons I think they never started a 3 was 1) the story of bg finished in 2 and 2) they started to work on the da universe around the time nwn 1 was done
