Thanks for all the good replies. I have BG2 but he didn't like it, for one thing the characters look tiny and text is unreadable on our 1080p TV. We actually just got Mount and Blade Warband, its fun but combat is hard and he has trouble figuring out where to go/what to do next. I'll follow up with some of the suggestions, thanks for the heads up about content of some of the games.

NWN starts off pretty painfully slow but NWN2 isn't so bad (in that respect) and will feel a lot like KOTOR.

Witcher and ME and both out, but I think he could probably handle Dragon Age. There's some sexual innuendo but I'm not aware that it's graphic at all, and I think you can turn the blood settings down (which really aren't -that- graphic to begin with).

Might be a little action-y but Dungeon Siege 2 is a fun rpg-lite hack and slash and it'd also let you play together. Some puzzles and mostly trivial dialogue choices, but lots of side quests and places to explore.

It's less an RPG than a hack-n-slash dungeon crawler, but Torchlight might be a good fit. I'd pick Torchlight over Diablo II if you're playing by yourself - it's simpler, more single-player focused, easier to get into, and less graphic.

Plus it's very cheap.

NWN 1 is all about the hundreds of custom campaigns and modules (with both single and multiplayer options). There were many great works by the community, and some are tailored to specific classes as well which makes them even more fun.

Don't even bother playing the official campaign from NWN 1, it's nothing more than a hastily thrown together tech demo showcasing the basics of the toolset.

Why is everybody recommending Oblivion for a 10 year old? I don't know about you, but the whole Rifts to hell and wandering around in that environment doesn't really seem to be particularly wholesome to me ....

Assuming you're starting at level 1 it doesn't really matter what module you're playing, the mechanics of the game are simply painful at that low of a level (one attack or one spell every 6 seconds, completely at the mercy of the d20 roll). Same with NWN2, but the graphics hide it more efficiently as I recall and I also remember levelling more quickly in 2 (at least as far as the OC is concerned).

You might want to look into DeathSpank. It's a hack-and-slash RPG, but has little blood. There are plenty of quests, the combat is simple, it's cheap, and it's hilarious. Here is IGN's review: DeathSpank

Again, it all depends on the campaign. Most my favorite ones had you starting off at levels 6-8, so you already had a good starting base to go by.

My point was to not compare the official campaigns, because in NWN 1's case, I believe it wasn't even going to have a campaign at first, but then later on in development they realized they needed something for the general crowd and threw together the mess that was the OC. It's all about the fan made mods (though the expansion campaigns are good too, as are the premium modules).

Has anyone mentioned Deus Ex?

I still haven't played it, but it gets lots of love here. I don't know anything about the content, though. (violence/sexy time)
